Roy Keane Praises One player for ‘Big Impact’ as New Role Emerges in Man United’s Derby Win

Roy Keane does not hand out praise lightly, especially when it comes to Manchester United. So when the former United captain singled out one player after the 2–0 derby win over Manchester City, it spoke volumes about both the performance and the direction United are heading under Michael Carrick.

At Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, United delivered one of their most complete displays of the season, brushing aside City with energy, control and belief. It was a result that surprised many, including Keane himself, but by full-time the Irishman was clear: this was no fluke.

United set the tone early

Speaking after the match, Roy Keane admitted United had completely outplayed their rivals and reserved special praise for Bruno Fernandes.

“It has been a perfect afternoon for United,” Keane said. “It is not as if they got lucky. They dominated the game, they scored two and could have scored more.

“The top players turned up, like Bruno. Players had a big impact. City are a little bit off it. They lack intensity. It has been perfect for him [Michael Carrick].”

For Fernandes, it was not just the performance that stood out, but the role he played within the team.

Under former head coach Ruben Amorim, Fernandes had often been used deeper in midfield, operating in a pivot role that limited his influence in the final third. While his work rate never dropped, his natural attacking instincts were muted.

Carrick’s arrival has changed that. Against City, Fernandes was deployed much higher up the pitch, operating as a true No.10 behind Mbeumo. The difference was immediate. He found pockets of space, linked the play intelligently and constantly looked to hurt City between the lines.

More importantly, Fernandes was given freedom to lead.
