Liam Rosenior Reveals Reason for Estevao's Absence in Chelsea’s 2-0 Win Over Brentford

Chelsea secured a solid 2-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday, but the match came amid a wave of illness that has affected the squad this week. Head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed that young forward Estevao was absent from the team due to illness, joining several other players who have been sidelined or struggling in recent days.

Estevao Out Due to Illness

Rosenior revealed after the match that Estevao, who has been showing promise in training and youth fixtures, was unable to take part against the Bees because of a bout of flu sweeping through the Chelsea camp.

“Yeah, he was ill,” Rosenior said post-match. “It’s running through the squad. There were a few, I won’t say who, but there were a couple of players playing today who were complaining about their chests. They put in a magnificent effort.”

Estevao’s absence was one of several health concerns Chelsea had to manage this week. Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens were both forced to miss the midweek Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal after falling ill on the eve of the game. Delap returned to the squad against Brentford, coming off the bench to win the penalty that Cole Palmer converted for Chelsea’s second goal, while Gittens remained sidelined.

Managing Health in the Squad

Chelsea have taken proactive measures to prevent the illness from spreading further. Ahead of the Brentford clash, the club held a meeting reminding players and staff about the importance of hygiene, particularly handwashing. Rosenior confirmed that ill players were kept separate from the main squad to protect the rest of the team.

“I felt that’s why we weren’t good with the ball,” Rosenior added. “I won’t give you names, it’s not right for me to do that, but I’m so happy with the attitude of the group to get through this game.”

Despite the illnesses, the Blues produced a disciplined performance, showing determination and resilience on the pitch to secure three crucial points.

Injury Concerns for Chelsea

In addition to illness, Chelsea also had to manage an injury concern in defence. Tosin Adarabioyo was impressive at the back but was replaced after 57 minutes by Wesley Fofana following a suspected hamstring problem.

Rosenior offered a cautious update on Adarabioyo’s condition:

“I think it was precautionary at the moment. [Tosin] said he felt something in his hamstring. I don’t know if it’s serious. He said it felt better afterwards.”

While Chelsea have been actively searching for a new centre-back this January, Rosenior stressed that the potential injury to Adarabioyo would not alter the club’s transfer priorities.

“No. We have our plans of what we want to do. That won’t make any real difference to our thinking,” he said.
