Manchester United are weighing up a move to bring Carlos Baleba to Old Trafford, with a £50million bid now under consideration as part of their summer transfer planning. The midfielder from Brighton & Hove Albion has been on the club’s radar for a prolonged period, and interest remains active ahead of the window.

The situation around Baleba has developed gradually over the past year, with scouting reports repeatedly highlighting him as a potential option for midfield reinforcement. Discussions previously reached an advanced stage, with personal terms described as broadly agreed when United first explored a deal. That earlier understanding remains relevant as the club revisit the possibility of a transfer.

Interest in Baleba was initially strong under Ruben Amorim, although the club’s spending priorities shifted significantly after more than £200million was committed to attacking signings including Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. That outlay led to the midfield plan being paused rather than cancelled, leaving Baleba’s situation open.

Midfield changes are expected again this summer, with Casemiro set to leave at the end of the campaign. Manuel Ugarte has also struggled to fully establish himself as a consistent starter, creating uncertainty in central areas. Those circumstances have brought Baleba back into focus within recruitment discussions at Old Trafford.

Reports suggest United are now preparing an initial bid in the region of £50million. According to The Athletic, that figure represents the level at which they are expected to begin talks rather than their final valuation. Brighton’s stance is not expected to be flexible, given their history of holding firm in negotiations.

When United first showed interest in Baleba, Brighton’s valuation was significantly higher, with expectations set at around £100million. That level was compared internally to the fee paid by Chelsea for Moises Caicedo in 2023, reflecting the club’s approach to valuing key midfield players in the market.

During the summer, United were previously prepared to consider a package rising as high as £75million to secure his signature. The current position marks a reduced opening approach, which could test Brighton’s willingness to negotiate but may fall short of their long-standing valuation.

Baleba’s performances this season have been closely monitored. Under Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler, he has not always completed full matches, having been substituted 15 times across the campaign. He has finished a full 90 minutes on only three occasions, one of which came in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Chelsea earlier in the week.

Despite inconsistent minutes, his physical presence and midfield versatility continue to be recognised internally at United. His ability to operate in different phases of play has kept him on the club’s shortlist alongside other targets being tracked for the same position.

International experience has also contributed to his profile. Baleba featured five times for Cameroon during this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. His performances helped the national side reach the quarter-finals before a 2-0 defeat to Morocco, where their tournament ended against the hosts.

Alongside Baleba, United’s recruitment department has monitored several other midfield options. Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United pair Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have all been assessed. Each represents a different profile, with all expected to require significant transfer fees if approached.

United’s recruitment strategy includes plans to sign at least two central midfielders this summer. Depending on outgoings, that number could increase. Casemiro’s departure opens one space, while uncertainty around Manuel Ugarte’s future adds another variable, with interest in him reported from clubs including Juventus and Ajax.

Decision-making at Old Trafford is also linked to managerial evaluation. Michael Carrick has overseen a strong run of results since taking interim charge, guiding United from seventh place to third in the league table. His impact has placed him among the more effective performers in 2026 based on results since his appointment.

The club have not confirmed whether Carrick will remain in charge beyond the season. That decision is expected once the campaign concludes and could influence recruitment direction and player profiling across the squad rebuild.
