“NOT good enough!” — Roy Keane and Gary Neville blast Man United Players after Aston Villa defeat

Manchester United left Villa Park with more than just a disappointing defeat on Sunday afternoon. They also walked away with some brutally honest criticism from two of the club’s most outspoken former leaders, as Roy Keane and Gary Neville publicly questioned the defensive commitment of Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot.

It was a historic afternoon for Aston Villa, who defeated United at home for just the second time in 27 Premier League meetings. A stunning brace from Morgan Rogers sealed a 2–1 victory and extended Unai Emery’s side to ten consecutive wins, keeping them firmly in the title conversation.

For Manchester United, however, the focus quickly shifted from Villa’s quality to their own failings. This was United’s first league defeat at Villa Park since 1995, and one that raised uncomfortable questions about effort, awareness, and responsibility at key moments.

Speaking after the final whistle on Sky Sports, Keane did not hide his frustration. The former United captain, known for demanding absolute commitment from teammates during his playing days, suggested that some players are still failing to understand what it takes to win difficult away games in the Premier League.

“You can have all the talent in the world,” Keane said, “but we mention it time and time again, you’ve got to roll your sleeves up. When the game gets tough, you have to do your bit for the team.”

His sharpest criticism was aimed at Diogo Dalot, who struggled against Villa’s aggressive wide play. Keane stopped short of using extreme language but made it clear he felt the Portuguese defender was not doing enough defensively.

“I won’t use the word ‘cheating’,” Keane added, “but they’re not doing enough. After the game, I’d be asking him, ‘Are you going to stop him?’”

Dalot also came under fire from supporters on social media, particularly for his role in the build-up to Rogers’ second goal. United failed to apply pressure near the corner flag, allowing Villa to recycle possession and create space, a moment Keane described as unacceptable at this level.

The first goal also exposed United’s defensive structure, and this time Leny Yoro was placed firmly in the spotlight. The young French defender, signed for his potential and composure, was criticised by Neville for not closing Rogers down quickly enough as danger developed.

“That is so, so special from Morgan Rogers,” Neville said while analysing the goal. “But as Yoro doesn’t go and close him down on that first touch, he ambles. I thought straight away, ‘You could be in trouble here.’”

Neville explained that when facing a powerful and confident attacker, defenders must be proactive, not passive. According to him, Yoro’s hesitation gave Rogers the invitation he needed to attack the box, cut inside, and produce a moment of real quality.

“I’ve played that position,” Neville added. “When you’re against a special player, you can’t drift. You have to get close, harass him, and make sure he doesn’t feel comfortable.”

While Neville acknowledged that Rogers still had plenty of work to do to finish the move, he insisted that the danger should have been recognised much earlier. For a team with ambitions of returning to the top four, those small moments of hesitation are often the difference between winning and losing.

From a broader perspective, the defeat also carried consequences in the league table. United missed the chance to move level with rivals Chelsea and Liverpool and remain just outside the Premier League’s top four. In a season where margins are tight, dropped points away from home could prove costly.

There were positives for Villa, who continue to thrive under Unai Emery. Rogers’ performance highlighted Villa’s confidence and attacking clarity, while their defensive discipline ensured United rarely found rhythm or momentum.

For United boss Ruben Amorim, the challenge now is clear. Talent alone is not enough. As Keane repeatedly stressed, effort, awareness, and responsibility must match ability, especially in hostile environments against in-form opponents.

The criticism from two club legends may be uncomfortable, but it reflects a wider concern among supporters. United have quality in their squad, yet moments of hesitation and a lack of aggression continue to undermine their progress.
