Manchester United Begin Talks to Sign £35m German Wonderkid Ahead of Tottenham

Manchester United have taken an early lead in the race to sign one of Germany’s most exciting young talents, with reports claiming the club have begun talks to land FC Köln winger Said El Mala ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

At just 19 years old, El Mala has quickly become one of the standout young players in the Bundesliga. His rise this season has been fast and eye-catching, and it is now drawing serious attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs — with Manchester United firmly in the mix.

According to reports in Germany from Bild, United have made contact with Köln through intermediaries to register their interest ahead of next summer’s transfer window. Tottenham have also approached the Bundesliga side, but it is believed United are pushing early as they look to gain an advantage in negotiations.

A breakout Bundesliga season

El Mala’s numbers this season explain why interest is growing so rapidly. In his first full Bundesliga campaign, the winger has already scored six goals and provided two assists in just 14 league appearances. For a teenager playing at the highest level in Germany, those returns underline both his quality and maturity.

Operating mainly from wide areas, El Mala combines pace, direct dribbling, and calm finishing. He is comfortable attacking defenders one-on-one, but also shows intelligence in his movement and decision-making around the box. These traits have made him one of Köln’s most dangerous players this season, despite his young age.

His performances have not gone unnoticed at international level either. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann rewarded El Mala with his first senior national team call-up last month — a huge milestone in the teenager’s development. That decision followed an impressive summer, where El Mala starred for Germany at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship and earned a place in the Team of the Tournament.

Why Manchester United are interested

For Manchester United, El Mala fits a clear recruitment profile. The club have increasingly targeted young, high-ceiling players who can develop into long-term first-team options. At 19, El Mala already has top-level experience, but still has plenty of room to grow.

United are also keen to add more pace and creativity in wide areas. While the club have attacking options, consistency has been an issue, and there is a strong belief that younger players with hunger and fearlessness can raise the overall level of the squad.

El Mala’s ability to score goals from wide positions is particularly appealing. United have often relied heavily on central players for goals, and adding a winger who can contribute regularly would help balance the attack.

Earlier in the summer, Brighton attempted to sign El Mala with a €15m offer, but that bid was swiftly rejected. Since then, his value has risen sharply due to his strong Bundesliga performances and international recognition.

Köln hold the power

Despite the growing interest, Köln are under no pressure to sell. El Mala is under contract until 2030 and does not have a release clause, giving the club full control over his future.

Sporting director Thomas Kessler made Köln’s position clear when speaking recently. He stressed that there is currently no reason to consider a sale and highlighted the club’s long-term plans for the player.

Köln have also improved El Mala’s contract, increasing his salary and adding performance-based bonuses. From their point of view, keeping him and allowing his value to rise further makes perfect sense.

However, Kessler did leave the door slightly open, admitting that if a huge offer arrives, the club would at least have to consider whether reinvesting that money could strengthen the squad overall.

United moving early could be key

That is why Manchester United’s early approach could prove important. By starting talks now, United can build relationships, understand Köln’s demands, and position themselves ahead of rivals when the summer window opens.

While a deal is far from guaranteed, United’s intent is clear. They see Said El Mala as a future star — and they want to be at the front of the queue.
