Manchester United Draw Up Four-Man Shortlist to Replace Casemiro Ahead of Summer Exit

Manchester United are preparing for a major midfield shake-up, with the club already lining up potential replacements for Casemiro ahead of his confirmed departure at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Adam Wharton is another name under serious consideration. The England international has caught the eye with his calm passing and tactical awareness, qualities that fit well with Carrick’s desire for control in midfield. At just 21, Wharton represents a potential long-term investment rather than a quick fix.

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also being monitored closely. United made enquiries about the Cameroon international last summer, and the player was reportedly open to the move. However, Brighton’s valuation of more than £100 million proved to be a major stumbling block. Baleba’s strength, mobility and ball-carrying ability make him an attractive option, but the price tag remains a serious concern.

Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list is Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. Known for his versatility, Scott can operate as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder, or even in wider roles. The only midfielder seemingly certain to stay is Kobbie Mainoo. The young academy graduate is already in talks over a new contract and is viewed as a central figure in Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s long-term vision for the club.

Last summer, United focused heavily on rebuilding their attack, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, while several high-profile forwards departed. This time, the spotlight is firmly on midfield.

If Casemiro, Ugarte and Fernandes all leave, United could find themselves needing to sign as many as four midfielders in one window. It is a risky but potentially transformative moment.
