Man United in Advanced Talks for Ligue 1 Striker as Amorim Plots Next Move

Man United’s rebuild under Rúben Amorim is gathering pace, and fresh reports suggest the club are already planning their next attacking move. After visible progress this season, United are now said to be in advanced talks over a Ligue 1 striker as they look to strengthen their options for the long term.

The Old Trafford hierarchy made no secret of their priorities last summer. Goals were a major problem in the previous campaign, with United scoring just 44 times in the Premier League – a total that left them lagging well behind the division’s elite. That shortfall triggered a dramatic overhaul of the forward line.

More than £214 million was invested to reshape the attack, with Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha arriving to give Amorim pace, power and flexibility in the final third. At the same time, big names departed, with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho all moving on as part of a clear change in direction.

So far, that gamble appears to be paying off. Following their narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle, United sit second in the Premier League for goals scored, having already found the net 32 times this season. The improved balance and movement in attack has been clear, with Šeško leading the line confidently and support coming from all angles.

However, behind that encouraging headline lies a quieter concern. One of the few forwards to remain at the club over the summer was Joshua Zirkzee, who had ended last season strongly before injury struck. The Dutchman missed the closing months of the 2024/25 campaign and the entire pre-season, setting him back significantly.

This season, Zirkzee has managed just 394 minutes of football and has largely played a supporting role behind Šeško. With rumours continuing to swirl about his future, United’s need for depth and reliability up front is becoming increasingly clear.

United in talks with Lassine Sinayoko

According to reports from Africafoot, Manchester United have made serious enquiries over Auxerre striker Lassine Sinayoko, with negotiations said to be progressing well. The Mali international has quietly impressed in Ligue 1 this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 16 league appearances.

Sinayoko’s recent form has only increased interest, with three goals across his last two matches putting him firmly on the radar of several clubs. United, however, are believed to be pushing ahead with talks, hoping to secure an agreement during the winter window.

The proposed deal is an interesting one. With Sinayoko’s contract at Auxerre set to expire next June, United are reportedly working on a pre-contract agreement that would see the 26-year-old arrive at Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer. Personal terms are still being finalised, but a salary in the region of £2.6 million per year is said to be close to agreement.

While the length of the contract has not been disclosed, the structure of the move suggests United see Sinayoko as a low-risk addition who could add depth without a heavy financial outlay.

Is experience the missing piece?

From a squad-building perspective, the logic is understandable. United are expected to focus heavily on midfield reinforcements over the next two transfer windows, with several current options facing uncertain futures. Bringing in a striker on a free deal would allow resources to be directed elsewhere.

That said, questions remain about whether Sinayoko fits the profile United truly need. If Šeško were to suffer an injury – something that has already happened this season – United could find themselves dangerously short of proven striking options, especially if Zirkzee leaves in January or next summer.

Sinayoko could serve as a useful backup while highly-rated youngster Chido Obi continues his development in the academy. But asking the Mali international to lead the line for an extended period would be a gamble.

His goal record, while improving, is not overwhelming. Last season, he scored five goals in 34 Ligue 1 matches, and before that, he managed 11 goals across 67 Ligue 2 appearances over three seasons. Those numbers raise fair doubts about whether he can consistently deliver at the highest level.

Learning from past mistakes

There is also a wider lesson United must consider. Last season, the club faced criticism for placing too much responsibility on young forwards. Instead of signing an established, experienced striker to ease the pressure, United opted for another developing profile in Zirkzee.

As a result, Zirkzee was thrown into demanding role without a senior figure to learn from. While both showed promise, the lack of experience around them was felt at key moments.

If United proceed with Sinayoko, they must be clear about his role. As a squad option who can contribute in rotation, the move makes sense. As a direct solution to their long-standing need for a reliable second striker, it may fall short.
