Liam Rosenior Sends Warning Message to Chelsea Stars After FA Fine Over Indiscipline

Liam Rosenior has moved quickly to challenge the growing perception that Chelsea lack discipline, insisting he has never fined a player in his managerial career but making it clear that standards must be upheld following the club’s recent punishment from the Football Association.

The new Chelsea head coach, who has previously managed Strasbourg, Hull City and Derby County, is still early in his tenure at Stamford Bridge. However, his calm approach to discipline has already come under the spotlight after the FA hit the Blues with a hefty £150,000 fine for an incident that occurred last month.

FA fine brings discipline into focus

Chelsea were sanctioned following their 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa, a match that proved tense both on and off the pitch. During the game, a water bottle was thrown from the Chelsea technical area towards the Villa bench, an act that the FA later described as a “very serious incident”.

Although the individual responsible was never identified despite an internal investigation, Chelsea admitted the charge, leading to the significant fine. In its written reasons, the FA Commission warned that the act could have “easily provoked a reaction” and criticised the behaviour as “disrespectful, irresponsible and dangerous”.

The incident occurred before Rosenior’s appointment, with Enzo Maresca still in charge at the time. Yet the timing has placed immediate pressure on the new manager to address questions about discipline within the squad.

Rosenior’s clear philosophy on discipline

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace, Rosenior revealed that he has never fined a footballer during his managerial career — and hopes that record will continue at Chelsea.

“I haven’t had to so far,” Rosenior explained. “You can motivate players in many different ways. Every manager is different. For me, discipline and habits are about helping the team win, not about punishment.”

The 41-year-old stressed that strong values and daily standards matter more than financial penalties. At his previous clubs, he said, fines were unnecessary because players took responsibility for their behaviour.

“In my last clubs, I didn’t fine anyone ever because the discipline in the team was really good,” he added. “The habits were good, the values were good. So far, in my time here, the players have been magnificent, and that’s what I’ll focus on.”

While Rosenior stopped short of introducing a fines system, his words carried a subtle warning. With Chelsea already under scrutiny, he made it clear that maintaining discipline is non-negotiable.

Chelsea’s on-pitch record raises questions

The FA fine is not the only reason Chelsea’s discipline has been questioned this season. On the pitch, no Premier League side has received more red cards than the Blues, who have already picked up five dismissals.

That statistic has fuelled claims that Chelsea struggle to control games emotionally, particularly in high-pressure moments. Rosenior, however, believes context is important and is keen to judge the squad based on what he sees day to day.

He also appears determined to avoid creating an atmosphere of fear or punishment, instead focusing on trust and accountability — a contrast to some previous Chelsea regimes.

A contrast with the past

Chelsea’s history with internal discipline is well documented. During Frank Lampard’s first spell as manager in the 2019–20 season, an internal fines list was leaked, revealing strict penalties for minor breaches. Players could be fined up to £20,000 for being late to training, with the money reportedly going towards team activities and charitable causes.

Rosenior’s approach could hardly be more different. Rather than relying on fines, he believes consistent habits and clear communication are more effective in building a winning culture.

That philosophy will be tested in the coming months, especially if Chelsea’s disciplinary issues continue to make headlines.

Backing Cole Palmer amid fitness concerns

Away from discipline, Rosenior also used the press conference to strongly back Cole Palmer, dismissing any suggestion that the England international is unhappy at the club.

Palmer has been managing fitness issues, raising concerns about his form and availability. However, Rosenior believes a fully fit Palmer is one of the best players in world football in his position — and a guaranteed pick for England.

“A fully fit Cole, firing, I wouldn’t change him for any player in the world in his position,” Rosenior said. “My job is to support him, along with the staff and medical team.”

He added that Palmer’s frustration is a positive sign, showing his desire to perform, but stressed the importance of managing his workload carefully.

“I don’t want him pushing himself to the point of pain in January,” Rosenior explained. “That’s crazy. It’s about helping him reach the levels he’s capable of.”
