Kobbie Mainoo Considering Permanent Manchester United Exit Amid Frustration

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly weighing up a permanent exit from Old Trafford after growing frustrated with his lack of opportunities under Ruben Amorim. The 20-year-old, once hailed as one of the club’s brightest prospects, has struggled to break into the first team this season, prompting speculation over his future.

Mainoo’s only start this season came in August during United’s humbling 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. That game, a shocking low point for the club, highlighted the challenges the young midfielder has faced in trying to establish himself in a squad with limited openings for emerging talent. Despite pushing for a loan move during the summer window, United refused to sanction his temporary departure, believing he would have a role to play over the course of the season.

However, frustration has begun to mount. Mainoo was being considered for inclusion against Aston Villa last Sunday, only to be sidelined with a calf injury during training. Ruben Amorim has consistently emphasised Mainoo’s potential, describing him as “the future” of the club and insisting that patience will be key for the teenager.

“That is my feeling,” Amorim said ahead of the Newcastle game. “He just needs to wait for his chance and everything can change in football in two days.” The manager also stressed the club’s limitations in letting players leave without securing reinforcements: “If we are not getting someone, it is hard to leave. Even with a full squad we are shorter [in terms of players] for something that can happen here, so it’s going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don’t get a substitution.”

Unless United are able to secure one of their top midfield targets—Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, or Adam Wharton—selling Mainoo would leave Amorim with only Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte as backups to Fernandes and Casemiro. Mount has been sidelined with injury since Boxing Day, while Ugarte has started the club’s last two matches, highlighting the precariousness of the squad’s depth.

Mainoo’s situation reflects a broader challenge for Manchester United as they attempt to balance the development of young talent with the immediate demands of competing at the top level.
