“I’m Not Sure He’s the Answer” — Dwight Yorke Warns Ruben Amorim Against Signing Adam Wharton as Midfield Debate Intensifies

Manchester United’s search for a new midfielder has taken another twist after club legend Dwight Yorke openly advised manager Ruben Amorim to avoid targeting Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton. Yorke believes the 21-year-old England international is receiving “too much hype” and may not be ready for the responsibility United desperately need filled.

The Red Devils are expected to move for a central midfielder either in January or, more realistically, in the summer of 2026. After strengthening in other areas last window – including the attack and goalkeeper positions – midfield has now become the priority as Amorim looks to rebuild the team’s spine for the long term.

United Exploring Options But Concerns Grow Over Wharton

The club previously held early talks with Brighton regarding Carlos Baleba, but the Seagulls’ stunning £100m valuation forced United to pull out. More recently, Elliot Anderson has emerged as a strong candidate, especially after establishing himself as an England regular. His performances and statistics over the last three months have placed him alongside Premier League elite midfielders like Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.

Wharton, who made his first England start in the win over Albania last week, is another talent reportedly attracting attention from Old Trafford. His rapid rise at Crystal Palace and strong performances have put him on the radar of several top clubs.

However, Yorke believes United should think twice before joining the race.

Yorke Sends Strong Warning: “Too Much Hype”

Speaking via Snabbare, Yorke explained why he feels Wharton is not the right fit for United’s midfield rebuild.

“I’m not sure Adam Wharton is the answer. He’s still not quite there for me yet and that’s an area of concern we have to look to improve.”

Yorke pointed to United’s long history of world-class defensive midfielders, insisting the standards remain extremely high.

“You look at the history of this football club in its most successful years and they always had a fantastic number six. Casemiro has been hit and miss, and it’s a key part of your team. That central area is always so important.”

He also highlighted the scarcity of truly elite holding midfielders – players who can control a match, break up play, and distribute the ball with authority.

“These types of players are rare. You need someone who can defend, pass forward, dictate the pace… and United haven’t found that player yet.”

Yorke even jokingly suggested bringing back former United midfielder Michael Carrick.

“Bring back Michael Carrick, maybe? There we go. He’d have done a job in this team!”

The Bigger Picture: United’s Midfield Still Needs Major Investment

While Casemiro and captain Bruno Fernandes remain Amorim’s preferred pairing, both players are in the later stages of their careers. Fernandes’ deal expires in 2027 – with an option for an extra year – while Casemiro’s contract ends next summer. United can extend it, but the Brazilian’s £350,000-a-week wages remain a major issue.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe was critical of Casemiro’s contract when he arrived in 2023, and with the midfielder turning 34 next February, United know they must soon invest heavily to stay competitive.

Casemiro has staged a positive turnaround in form after a disappointing 2023/24 campaign, but even Amorim admits United must plan for what comes next.
