Manchester United’s midfield search has taken another twist during the January transfer window, with reports linking the club to AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The rumours have gathered pace in recent days, mainly because United’s need for reinforcements in the centre of the pitch has become clearer since the departure of Rúben Amorim.

But as the headlines grew louder, respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has stepped in to offer clarity — and his update may disappoint some United supporters who were hoping for a surprise move.

United’s midfield need is growing again

Manchester United’s football has started to look more stable under the interim setup, with Darren Fletcher and then Michael Carrick leaning towards a back-four system. The shape often resembles a 4-2-3-1 when United have the ball, and many fans have welcomed the change because it has brought more structure and balance.

However, that system places even more importance on the midfield pairing at the base of the team. With two central midfielders expected to protect the defence, win duels, and build attacks, it requires energy, discipline and quality — and that is exactly where United are still short.

At the moment, Carrick’s options for the double pivot look limited. Casemiro remains an experienced presence, but he cannot play every minute in a heavy schedule. Kobbie Mainoo is viewed as one of the club’s most important talents, yet he is still young and being carefully managed. Manuel Ugarte has struggled for regular football and is still trying to establish himself fully.

Bruno Fernandes has been pushed into a more advanced role, operating as the creative force behind the striker. That makes sense because he remains United’s best chance creator, but it also removes him from deeper areas where he has sometimes been forced to play in the past.

In terms of cover, Jack Fletcher is a promising young option who could be asked to step up, while Mason Mount might be used centrally if needed. But neither feels like the perfect answer in a midfield that still lacks consistency week to week.

Why Loftus-Cheek fits the profile

Loftus-Cheek is a player many Premier League fans already know well. Once tipped as one of the most exciting young talents at Chelsea, his career has seen flashes of brilliance mixed with setbacks.

Injuries played a major part in slowing his rise at Stamford Bridge, stopping him from truly becoming the main man many expected. He eventually moved to AC Milan in 2023, seeking a fresh start and more regular football.

Since arriving in Italy, Loftus-Cheek has become a useful and reliable option. He has now made 93 appearances for Milan and scored 11 goals, which shows he can still contribute in important moments. He is powerful, athletic, comfortable carrying the ball forward, and can play in more than one midfield role.

In a United squad that often lacks physical drive through the middle, Loftus-Cheek would bring something different. He would offer strength, running power, and the ability to support attacks — qualities that have been missing at times, especially when United struggle to progress the ball quickly.

At 29, he would not be a long-term project signing, but he could offer experience and reliability in a squad that still feels unbalanced.

Romano provides major clarification

Despite the interest, Romano has played down the idea of Loftus-Cheek moving to Old Trafford anytime soon.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained:
“Loftus-Cheek has been linked with Manchester United in recent days as a potential ‘secret’ option for the midfield.

“I’m not aware of contacts between Man United and the agents of Loftus-Cheek as of today.”

That is a crucial detail. It suggests that while Loftus-Cheek’s name may be circulating in the rumour mill, United have not yet made any real steps to turn that into a genuine move.

Aston Villa are the club making the move

While United’s link appears weak, Romano confirmed that Aston Villa are much more serious about Loftus-Cheek.

“Aston Villa, without a secret, approached the player, also approached AC Milan,” Romano said.
“They have an interest in Loftus-Cheek because [Boubacar] Kamara is injured, and so they are trying to enter into this deal for Loftus-Cheek. Let’s see what happens.”

Villa’s interest makes sense. Kamara is a key player for them and losing him would force the club to react quickly. Loftus-Cheek offers Premier League experience and a physical style that could suit Unai Emery’s squad.

Milan want him to stay

Perhaps the biggest blow to any transfer hopes is the fact AC Milan appear keen to keep the midfielder. Romano revealed that the Italian giants have already started discussions over a new contract.

“Milan have already started some initial conversation with Loftus-Cheek over a new contract at the club,” he said. “And so, let’s see what happens. New deal for Loftus-Cheek or Aston Villa interested?”

That is a strong indicator that Milan value him, and it makes any January move far more difficult. If a club is planning a renewal, it usually means they do not want to lose the player mid-season unless a big offer arrives.

What it means for Manchester United

For United, the Loftus-Cheek rumours may prove to be just that — rumours. Without contact, without a clear push from the club, and with Milan looking to extend his deal, the chances of him arriving at Old Trafford appear slim.
