Chelsea Renew Interest in Kim Min-jae as Bayern Munich Consider Summer Talks

Chelsea could reignite their long-standing interest in Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae next summer, with fresh reports suggesting the Premier League side are closely monitoring his situation in Germany.

The South Korea international has been the subject of transfer talk for over a year, and although he remains a valued member of Bayern’s squad, his long-term future at the Allianz Arena is no longer viewed as completely settled. With Chelsea still searching for defensive stability and experience, Kim’s name has once again emerged as one to watch.

Kim Min-jae’s standing at Bayern Munich

Kim joined Bayern from Napoli in the summer of 2023 for around €50 million after playing a key role in Napoli’s historic Serie A title win. He arrived with a strong reputation as one of Europe’s most reliable centre-backs, known for his strength, pace, and calmness on the ball.

Since then, his time in Germany has been solid but not entirely straightforward. While Kim has featured regularly across competitions, he has not always been a guaranteed starter. This season, he has made seven starts in the Bundesliga, with 11 league appearances overall, alongside six outings in the Champions League.

The arrival of Jonathan Tah last summer added more competition at centre-back, placing Kim in a rotation system under new Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany. That approach has allowed Bayern to manage minutes across a busy schedule, but it has also raised questions about whether Kim is fully satisfied with his role.

Chelsea interest confirmed by Christian Falk

According to respected Bild journalist Christian Falk, Chelsea’s interest in Kim Min-jae is very real. Speaking to CFBayern, Falk explained that the defender’s representatives are fully aware of Chelsea’s admiration.

“It is true: Kim Min-jae’s agents are informed that Chelsea are interested,” Falk said.
“Chelsea have a shortlist with a few defenders on it – and Min-jae is on this list.”

However, Falk also stressed that Kim is currently content at Bayern, largely due to Kompany’s clear rotation policy and communication.

“Bayern Munich have said that if Kim is happy with the current situation, where he’s not always starting for the club, that’s okay for them,” he added.

This suggests there is no immediate push from either the player or the club to force a move. But the situation could change quickly if Kim decides he wants a more central role elsewhere.

Bayern open to talks – at the right price

While Bayern are not actively looking to sell, they are understood to be open to discussions if Kim himself asks to leave. Financial considerations could also play a key role.

Falk explained that Bayern would need a significant fee to even consider parting ways with the defender.

“If not, and he asks for a move to get more playing time, FC Bayern are then open for talks,” he said.
“If they want to have talks, they then need money to sign other defenders. They don’t currently have the money to do this.”

This is where Chelsea come into the picture. Bayern paid €50m to sign Kim from Napoli, and they would expect to recoup a sizeable portion of that fee. Chelsea, with their financial power and ongoing squad rebuild, could be one of the few clubs capable of meeting Bayern’s demands.

Why Kim Min-jae fits Chelsea’s needs

Chelsea’s defensive issues have been well documented over the past two seasons. Injuries, inconsistency, and a lack of leadership at the back have often cost the Blues points in key moments.

At 29, Kim offers experience at the highest level, having played in Serie A, the Bundesliga, and the Champions League. He is strong in aerial duels, aggressive in one-on-one situations, and comfortable stepping out with the ball – qualities that suit the physical demands of the Premier League.

Chelsea were linked with Kim last summer, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, but no formal move materialised. A year on, with Chelsea still looking to strike the right balance between youth and experience, the South Korean defender could be viewed as a ready-made solution.

Wider concerns for Bayern Munich

Kim’s situation also comes at a delicate time for Bayern. The club have already missed out on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City, and there are growing concerns over Dayot Upamecano’s future.

Upamecano has yet to agree a new contract, despite Bayern offering improved terms. Losing another senior centre-back would force Bayern back into the market, something they are keen to avoid unless absolutely necessary.

Bayern have been linked with Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, but Chelsea and Manchester City are both reportedly pushing hard for his signature. That competition only adds to the uncertainty surrounding Bayern’s defensive planning.

Kim Min-jae remains under contract at Bayern until 2028, meaning the German giants are under no pressure to sell. For now, the defender is said to be settled and focused on helping Bayern compete on all fronts.
