“Connor Is the Player They Need” — Club Legend Urges Man United to Sign Gallagher
Parker says Gallagher’s stamina, mentality, and work rate make him the perfect addition for Manchester United’s rebuild.

Manchester United are on the lookout for reinforcements in midfield, with Ruben Amorim reportedly targeting an athletic, dynamic presence to strengthen the squad. Former United player Paul Parker has recently weighed in on the debate, suggesting that Conor Gallagher, currently at Atletico Madrid, would be the perfect addition to Old Trafford. However, a closer look at United’s needs suggests that Gallagher might not be the ideal solution.
Parker Backs Gallagher
In an exclusive interview with UtdDistrict, Parker singled out Gallagher as the type of player who could make an immediate impact.
“If you’re looking to take it forward slowly and you want to do something, you have to have something in the back end that you look to build on,” Parker explained. “You look to build on with that person coming in on loan, or you see you get someone on loan who does well, you get that calibre of player to come in, get it cemented in, then Conor is the one. He’s the one player I think they need.”
Parker praised Gallagher’s commitment and consistency, noting his impressive work ethic. “One player who plays a lot of football, doesn’t get injured often and willing to play. I’ve watched him many a time when he was at Palace and when he was at Chelsea, and every time you see him grimacing, the lad wants to play games of football. If he doesn’t play, it’s a good reason. Even if he’s had a knock, he wants to play football. And I know that if he comes to Manchester United, that would be the cherry on the top.”
Gallagher’s Strengths
Gallagher is widely recognised as an energetic, athletic midfielder. He covers ground efficiently, presses relentlessly, and consistently supports his teammates both defensively and offensively. His timing to arrive late in the box has allowed him to score crucial goals, and his ability to progress the ball during the second phase of play demonstrates versatility.
In addition, his recent form at Atletico Madrid has showcased his adaptability, proving he can step into a new system and contribute immediately—a quality Parker emphasizes as crucial for Manchester United.
Why Gallagher May Not Be the Right Fit

Despite Parker’s endorsement, Gallagher may not align with Manchester United’s current tactical needs. Ruben Amorim has reportedly requested a midfielder capable of dictating play from deeper positions—a player who can set the tempo, recycle possession, and allow Bruno Fernandes to push forward.
Gallagher excels in pressing and arriving late in the opposition box, but his on-the-ball game in deeper positions is limited. He is a strong second-phase ball carrier but not a deep-lying playmaker. Deploying him in the role United most urgently needs could limit his natural strengths and reduce his impact.
Moreover, United’s current squad is already well-stocked in attacking midfield positions. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo provide depth in the no.10 role, while Mason Mount—if signed or retained—covers many of Gallagher’s off-ball qualities. As a result, Gallagher’s best position might actually be as a central or attacking midfielder rather than the defensive anchor United require.
Timing and Transfer Strategy
Reports suggest that Manchester United could make a move in January or wait until the summer transfer window to bolster their midfield. Previous targets such as Carlos Baleba of Brighton were considered ideal, but negotiations stalled as the Seagulls had no intention of selling at the time. United also reportedly scouted Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Adam Wharton, though details remain speculative.
Ultimately, while Gallagher’s athleticism and resilience make him an attractive option, his skill set may not fully meet Manchester United’s need for a deep-lying, game-controlling midfielder. Amorim will need to weigh immediate impact against tactical suitability, deciding whether to follow Parker’s advice or seek a more fitting profile.
Paul Parker’s recommendation of Conor Gallagher highlights the midfielder’s undeniable qualities—commitment, stamina, and the ability to contribute in crucial moments. Yet, Manchester United’s immediate need is for a deep-lying playmaker who can dictate the rhythm of the game and protect the defence while allowing attacking stars like Bruno Fernandes to flourish.
While Gallagher could enhance United’s squad, it remains questionable whether he can fill the precise role required. The January transfer window may offer opportunities, but any signing will need to carefully balance athleticism, tactical intelligence, and on-ball capability to truly strengthen the heart of United’s midfield.
