Michael Carrick demands Marcus Rashford's Return to Old Trafford

Michael Carrick’s brief spell in charge of Manchester United has already felt like the start of something new, and now a familiar name has been pulled back into the conversation around the club’s future. According to reports from The Telegraph, Carrick would like to bring Marcus Rashford back to Old Trafford if he is appointed United’s permanent manager at the end of the season.

It is a storyline that few would have predicted only weeks ago. United were drifting, confidence was low, and Rashford looked as far away from the club as he had ever been. But football moves quickly, and Carrick’s immediate impact has changed the mood around the team almost overnight.

Carrick’s dream start sparks new ideas

Carrick stepped in as interim head coach following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, and few expected such instant results. Yet in his first two matches, United defeated Manchester City and Arsenal back-to-back, collecting six points against the Premier League’s top two sides.

The performances were just as important as the results. United looked organised, aggressive and confident again, with players responding positively to Carrick’s calm but firm approach. Those wins have already fuelled talk that Carrick could be given the job on a permanent basis if this form continues.

With that possibility in mind, the Telegraph reports that Carrick has clear ideas about how he would shape the squad long-term. One of those ideas involves Rashford, a player he knows well from his final years as a United player.

Rashford’s difficult United exit

Rashford’s departure from Manchester United was messy and painful. Under Amorim, the England international was frozen out of the squad, with the former head coach making the brutal claim that he would rather play the club’s 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than select Rashford.

That relationship never recovered. Rashford first joined Aston Villa on loan at the end of the 2024/25 season before securing a bigger move to Barcelona for the current campaign. It felt like the end of the road for a player once seen as the face of United’s future.

Carrick, however, appears to see things differently. Having played alongside Rashford during his early rise at Old Trafford, the former midfielder reportedly still believes there is a role for him at his boyhood club especially under a new structure and a different type of leadership.

Barcelona form tells a different story

While Rashford’s United career stalled, his time in Spain has been far more positive. At Barcelona, he has rediscovered his confidence and attacking edge, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists across competitions so far this season.

Barcelona hold a £26million option to make the move permanent, and all indications suggest they are planning to activate it. Rashford himself is said to prefer staying in Catalonia, where he feels settled and valued.

Speaking after scoring in the Champions League midweek, Rashford admitted that adapting to Hansi Flick’s intense style of play took time, but he is now embracing it.

“For the front guys we have to put as much pressure on the ball as possible,” Rashford explained. “It brings an intensity to the game. When we play at this intensity it’s difficult for teams to match us.”

He also acknowledged that the defensive demands are different from what he was used to in England, but added that when it works, it works very well.

Flick and Barca keeping options open

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has been full of praise for Rashford’s attitude and performances, while also making it clear that the final decision on his future will sit with sporting director Deco.

“Marcus’ performances have been really good until now,” Flick said. “For me, of course with Marcus we have a player at the top level, but I also appreciate his desire to be here.”

That desire could be a key factor if United do come calling again. Rashford has always spoken warmly about his connection to Manchester United, even during difficult periods, and Carrick’s presence could change how a return is viewed.

United’s January plans and Carrick’s vision

For now, United are not expected to be busy in the January transfer window. Carrick has suggested stability is more important than drastic changes, with few arrivals or departures planned.

Joshua Zirkzee had been linked with a potential move back to Italy, but Carrick has publicly backed the striker to stay and fight for his place.

“Josh is just trying to work to get fit and get around the group,” Carrick said. “It’s been great to have him back training. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

That comment sums up Carrick’s early approach, restore confidence, reconnect with players, and build from within. In that context, it is not hard to see why he might feel Rashford still has a part to play.

Whether Rashford would be willing to return, especially with Barcelona offering stability and success, remains uncertain. But one thing is clear Carrick’s arrival has reopened doors that once seemed firmly shut, and Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United story may not be finished just yet.
