“Fans need to be better” – Wayne Rooney calls out Arsenal supporters after shocking scenes

Wayne Rooney has urged Arsenal supporters to play a stronger role in their team’s push for the Premier League title, insisting that backing from the stands could be decisive during the closing weeks of the season.

Arsenal’s hopes of ending a 22-year wait for the league title suffered a setback following a 2-1 defeat away to Manchester City on Sunday. The result has tightened the race at the top, leaving City just three points behind with a game in hand. Should Pep Guardiola’s side win their midweek fixture against Burnley, they would move above the Gunners on goal difference.

Despite the outcome, Arsenal’s overall campaign has been strong. They have spent long periods at the summit and remain in contention with five matches still to play. However, recent performances have not matched earlier standards, and the pressure has begun to show both on and off the pitch.

That tension was visible earlier this month when sections of the home crowd voiced their frustration after a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on 11 April. The reaction drew attention, particularly given Arsenal’s position in the table and their broader achievements this season.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney made it clear he believes supporters have a responsibility to remain behind the team during difficult moments.

“I think the Arsenal fans need to be better,” he said. “I saw them booing the team off the other day [against Bournemouth]. Arsenal have been brilliant all season and they’ve hit a little bad run of form.”

Rooney emphasised that the relationship between players and supporters can have a real impact, particularly in high-pressure situations such as a title run-in. He pointed out that players invest significant time and effort throughout the season to reach this stage, and negative reactions from the stands can affect confidence.

“They need to understand how much the fan support means to the players and how much it can help you,” he continued. “The players will have put so much work in day in and day out on the training pitch to be in the position they’re in now, so when you lose a game and you get booed off, that can affect players.”

With only five fixtures remaining, the margins for error are small. Arsenal are attempting to hold off a team with a proven track record of closing out title races, and Rooney believes the atmosphere created by supporters could make a meaningful difference.

“I think for Arsenal to win the league, the Arsenal fans need to play their part,” he added.

The situation also carries echoes of previous seasons. Arsenal were in a commanding position during the 2022–23 campaign, leading the table for 248 days before eventually finishing second. That experience may be shaping the expectations and anxieties among supporters as the current season approaches its conclusion.

Rooney acknowledged that the desire to win the title is strong among fans, but stressed that maintaining belief and support is essential rather than allowing frustration to take over.

“Of course they want to win the league and they’re desperate to win the league, but I think they need to understand they’ve got a role to play,” he said.

Drawing from his own experience, Rooney compared the situation to the backing received by Manchester United supporters during more challenging periods in recent years. He highlighted how consistent support at the stadium can help players navigate difficult spells.

“If you look at Manchester United for instance, when over the last few years they have been going through a tough time with Eric ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, the fans were right behind the manager and backed the manager at the stadium,” Rooney explained.

“They were constantly singing and getting behind the team and very rarely booed the team off.”

He questioned the reaction directed at Arsenal following the Bournemouth result, especially given the broader context of their season. The team remains at the top end of the table and has also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, achievements that underline their progress.

“Arsenal have been top of the league all season, they’re in the Champions League semi-finals and they lose against Bournemouth and they get booed off?” Rooney said.

“The fans need to be better for the players and back the players a little bit more because that will have hurt the Arsenal players, 100%.”

As the title race enters its final phase, Arsenal’s focus will be on maintaining consistency on the pitch. At the same time, Rooney’s comments serve as a reminder that the environment around the team can influence outcomes in subtle but important ways.

With Manchester City applying pressure and holding a game in hand, every point and every performance carries added weight. Whether Arsenal can respond effectively may depend not only on their quality but also on the collective belief shared between players and supporters during these decisive weeks.
