Revealed: Why Chelsea Backed Out Of Deal To Sign Douglas Luiz

Douglas Luiz is edging closer to an emotional return to Aston Villa after Chelsea chose not to pursue their interest in the Brazilian midfielder, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over his future.

The 27-year-old is set to rejoin Villa on loan after completing his medical on Thursday, with the deal including an option to make the move permanent for £21 million plus add-ons. If finalised, it would mark a homecoming for a player who spent five important years at Villa Park and remains hugely admired by supporters.

Luiz joined Juventus last summer but has endured a difficult season away from England. After struggling to secure a regular role in Turin, he was loaned to Nottingham Forest in the first half of the campaign. However, his time at the City Ground was badly disrupted by a hamstring injury, limiting him to just eight Premier League appearances.

Despite flashes of quality, the Brazilian was never able to build momentum. As January approached, Juventus were open to another loan move, and Luiz’s name quickly attracted interest across the Premier League — including from Chelsea.

Chelsea step back from deal

Earlier this month, Chelsea made contact with Juventus to explore the possibility of bringing Luiz to Stamford Bridge. The Blues were looking for short-term midfield cover as they continue reshaping their squad under head coach Liam Rosenior.

However, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Chelsea were only willing to consider a straight loan deal without any obligation to buy — a stance that did not appeal to Juventus.

“Chelsea were interested in him, they evaluated a short-term deal,” Ornstein explained on Sky Sports. “Ultimately, they decided not to crack on with that and they are going to prioritise the likes of Andrey Santos and their existing options.”

The decision reflects Chelsea’s longer-term strategy. The club remains committed to developing younger midfielders, particularly Andrey Santos, who impressed significantly during his loan spell at Strasbourg under Rosenior.

Santos featured regularly in France, showing maturity beyond his years, and Chelsea believe increased minutes at Stamford Bridge will benefit both the player and the club far more than bringing in an experienced option like Luiz on a temporary basis.

Villa always felt like home

While Chelsea cooled their interest, Aston Villa moved quickly — and crucially, they had one major advantage: Douglas Luiz himself.

Ornstein revealed that the midfielder was fully focused on returning to Villa Park, having built strong personal and professional ties during his previous spell.

“I spoke to so many people who said for Douglas Luiz it was only Aston Villa,” Ornstein said. “He was fixated on it. He obviously had such fond memories from his previous spell.”

Luiz joined Villa in 2019 from Manchester City and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club. During that time, he developed into one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders, admired for his tactical discipline, long-range shooting, and leadership.

He was a central figure in Villa’s rise under Unai Emery, helping the club qualify for European football and forming a strong midfield partnership with Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn.

Many inside Villa believe Luiz would never have left in the first place if not for financial pressures.

“I think he only left because of the PSR situation at Villa,” Ornstein added. “Otherwise, he probably would have stayed.”

That view is supported by events in January 2023, when Arsenal submitted multiple bids for Luiz — some reportedly rising to five offers — all of which Villa rejected. His loyalty was later rewarded with a new contract, underlining how highly he was valued.

Why this move makes sense

From Villa’s perspective, Luiz’s return offers both quality and familiarity at a crucial stage of the season.

Unai Emery’s side remain active across domestic and European competitions, and squad depth has become increasingly important. Luiz’s understanding of Emery’s tactical demands, combined with his Premier League experience, means he could make an immediate impact without needing time to adapt.

Statistically, his influence during his last full season at Villa was clear. He ranked among the club’s top players for tackles, interceptions, and progressive passes, while also contributing vital goals from midfield — including several from long range and the penalty spot.

Although his recent injury record raises some concerns, Villa’s medical team believe his hamstring problems are behind him. The loan structure also protects the club financially, allowing them to assess his fitness and form before committing to a permanent transfer.

A fresh start for Luiz

For Douglas Luiz, the move represents a chance to restart his career in familiar surroundings.
