Former Chelsea defender urges the club to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, comparing his potential impact to Thiago Silva’s transformative arrival

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has delivered a glowing endorsement of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, insisting the France international is exactly the type of signing the Blues need to take the next step and return to the elite level of European football.

Speaking on the Italian Football Podcast, Leboeuf did not hide his admiration for the Milan star, describing Maignan as “world-class” and a natural leader who could transform Chelsea’s back line in the same way Thiago Silva once did. While acknowledging that prising the goalkeeper away from the San Siro would be difficult, the former World Cup winner made it clear that Maignan represents a rare level of quality.

“Of course, Magic Mike, I don’t want to steal him from Milan, but the guy is world-class,” Leboeuf said. “He is so talented. I saw him playing in France and I’ve followed him in Italy.”

Why Maignan stands out among Europe’s elite goalkeepers

Leboeuf’s praise goes beyond reputation. He highlighted Maignan’s physical ability, sharp reflexes and commanding presence, traits that have made him one of the most reliable goalkeepers in Europe over the last few seasons.

“He is a pure talent,” Leboeuf added. “He is a cat, I call him a cat, he can jump and catch the ball like crazy. And he is a leader. He is what Chelsea needs.”

Maignan’s journey backs up those claims. After breaking through at Lille, he played a crucial role in their shock Ligue 1 title win in 2020–21, conceding just 23 league goals. That season earned him a move to AC Milan, where he quickly established himself as first choice and helped the club win Serie A in his debut campaign.

Statistically, Maignan has consistently ranked among the top goalkeepers in Europe for save percentage, claims from crosses and distribution accuracy. His ability with the ball at his feet is a major strength in modern football, allowing teams to build from the back with confidence.

A clear upgrade, despite faith in Chelsea’s current options

While Leboeuf was careful to praise Chelsea’s current goalkeeper Roberto Sánchez, he argued that Maignan would still represent a clear improvement in key areas.

“Roberto Sánchez is doing great right now but has made so many mistakes,” Leboeuf explained. “He is not as talented with his feet as Mike. Maignan would be a plus, definitely a plus.”

Chelsea’s struggles in recent seasons have often been linked to a lack of leadership and consistency at the back. Frequent changes in defence and costly errors in key moments have undermined otherwise promising performances. Leboeuf believes a dominant goalkeeper can bring calm and authority, reducing pressure on defenders and setting higher standards across the team.

The Thiago Silva comparison

One of Leboeuf’s most striking points was his comparison between Maignan and former Chelsea captain Thiago Silva. The Brazilian arrived at Stamford Bridge as an experienced winner and immediately improved the organisation and confidence of those around him.

“Chelsea needed Thiago Silva to settle down the defence,” Leboeuf said. “They will need a Mike Maignan to make the difference.”

This comparison speaks to Maignan’s influence beyond shot-stopping. At Milan, he is vocal, demanding and constantly organising his defence. His leadership has been especially valuable during high-pressure Champions League nights, where experience and composure often decide matches.

Chelsea’s long-term vision and the goalkeeper question

Chelsea’s current project is built around young, talented players with high potential. While this approach offers promise, it also comes with risks, particularly in key positions that demand experience and authority. Goalkeeper is one such role.

In recent seasons, Chelsea have rotated between options without fully settling on a long-term solution who combines consistency, leadership and elite-level performance. Leboeuf’s comments suggest that signing a proven, world-class goalkeeper like Maignan could accelerate the club’s progress and provide a solid foundation for the future.

Leboeuf on French talent and Deschamps’ riches

Beyond Chelsea, Leboeuf also spoke about the growing influence of French players in Serie A and across Europe. He praised Italian clubs for identifying and trusting French talent, pointing to players such as Ange-Yoan Bonny and others making their mark.

“If Italian teams are interested in French players, it means they have proven they have talent and consistency,” he said. “They can perform at the highest level.”

Leboeuf also reflected on the depth available to France manager Didier Deschamps, describing it as almost overwhelming.

“When you have players like Mbappé, Dembélé, Barcola and so many others, it’s insane,” he said. “Deschamps is lucky, he has the choices of a king.”

A bold idea that fits Chelsea’s ambition

While a move for Maignan would be complex and expensive, Leboeuf’s argument is clear. Chelsea do not just need more talent; they need leaders who raise standards instantly. In his view, Mike Maignan is one of the few players capable of doing that from day one.

Whether Chelsea act on such advice remains to be seen, but Leboeuf’s message is unmistakable: if the Blues truly want to return to the top, signing a goalkeeper of Maignan’s calibre could be the defining step.
