Pep Guardiola Explains Heated Clash With Newcastle Players and Referee
City boss breaks his silence after heated post-match scenes following Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.
Pep Guardiola found himself at the centre of dramatic scenes at St James’ Park after Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle, as the manager clashed with Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and even confronted referee Sam Barrott in a tense exchange. And now, the City boss has finally explained what he really said in those moments of anger that caught the attention of fans across the Premier League.
The match itself was packed with controversy. Harvey Barnes struck twice in the second half to seal a huge win for Newcastle, with both goals arriving in chaotic fashion. Barnes opened the scoring with a crisp finish from the edge of the box, before Ruben Dias levelled five minutes later with a deflected effort.
Gianluigi Donnarumma produced several big saves to keep City in the game, but he could do nothing about Barnes’ second— a close-range strike that took a long VAR check to confirm due to a tight offside call involving Bruno Guimaraes.
The decision went Newcastle’s way after officials ruled Dias had played Guimaraes onside from Nick Woltemade’s header. But City players were furious, claiming Donnarumma had been pushed in the build-up— a moment that was not penalised after review.
Guardiola’s Anger Spills Over
When the final whistle sounded, frustration erupted. Guardiola shook hands with Eddie Howe before marching onto the pitch, heading straight toward Joelinton and Guimaraes. The exchange was heated enough that Newcastle players and staff pulled Joelinton away.
Guardiola then moved toward referee Sam Barrott and appeared to express his anger before also confronting a nearby camera operator.
But when asked what he actually said to the Newcastle captain, Guardiola gave a calm, almost surprising answer.
“I said how good he is, and asked about the situation with Gigio and what happened. Everything is fine,” Guardiola told Sky Sports, repeating the phrase “everything is fine” several times as he tried to downplay the confrontation.

Pressed further about his exchange with the referee, Guardiola again refused to escalate the matter.
“No, nothing, nothing. Everything is fine… It is what it is.”
However, his tone suggested the opposite. His comments hinted that he still believed Donnarumma may have been fouled for Barnes’ decisive goal.
“It happened against Bournemouth, it happened again,” he said.
“Gigio saw the action. I didn’t see it, but I rely on my players… VAR and the referees decided the opposite. It is what it is. We are used to it.”
City’s VAR Frustration Grows
Manchester City now find themselves four points behind Arsenal, who could extend the gap to seven depending on the outcome of their match against Tottenham. The defeat comes just after City’s impressive 3-0 win over Liverpool, making the setback even more frustrating for Guardiola’s side.
Officiating has become a recurring theme for City this season. Guardiola’s remarks— though measured— reflect a growing frustration with consistency, especially regarding fouls on goalkeepers during set-piece situations.
Donnarumma himself appeared visibly upset during the VAR check, pointing repeatedly at the area where he believed he was pushed. City players surrounded the referee at full time, demanding clarity.
What Guardiola Really Meant
Despite his efforts to keep his comments diplomatic, Guardiola’s message was clear: City believe the rules around goalkeeper protection are being interpreted inconsistently— and they want answers.
His calm public explanation may not match the intensity of the confrontationss seen on the pitch, but his repeated references to previous incidents show this is not an isolated concern for the club.
