Barcelona sporting director Deco has finally explained why the club chose not to pursue one of world football’s brightest young talents Chelsea-bound Brazilian winger Estevao Willian.

“We already have Lamine Yamal”

“There are several reasons,” Deco explained.

“First, at this stage of the squad building process, we have a player for the same position with similar characteristics named Lamine Yamal. It’s obvious.”

Yamal, just 16 years old, has already become one of the most important players in Xavi’s squad. The Spain international is a regular starter, a Champions League performer, and one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.

According to Deco, signing another winger with an almost identical profile simply did not make sense.

“Perhaps if Estevao were a right-footed player who played on the other wing, the solution would be there,” he added.

“But that wasn’t the case. He’s a player very similar to Lamine, although with different characteristics.”
