Chelsea Climb to Fourth as Estevao, Joao Pedro and Fernandez Sink Crystal Palace

Chelsea continued their impressive rise up the Premier League table with a convincing 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, a result that lifted the Blues into fourth place and underlined the early impact of new head coach Liam Rosenior.

On a lively afternoon in south London, goals from Estevao Willian, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez proved too much for Palace, who showed flashes of threat but ultimately could not cope with Chelsea’s quality and control, especially after being reduced to ten men in the second half.

Bright start from both sides

The match began at a fast pace, with both teams creating clear chances inside the opening 15 minutes. Palace almost struck first when Jean-Philippe Mateta broke through after Benoit Badiashile lost possession, but Robert Sanchez, making his return in goal, spread himself well to block the striker’s effort with his right leg.

For much of the first half-hour, the contest was evenly balanced, with Palace matching Chelsea’s intensity and pressing well in midfield.

Estevao provides the breakthrough

The deadlock was finally broken in the 34th minute, and it came through a moment of quality and composure from Estevao Willian. A misplaced pass from young Palace defender Jaydee Canvot sent the Brazilian winger racing clear from just inside the Chelsea half.

Estevao showed electric pace to pull away from Tyrick Mitchell before calmly firing past Dean Henderson. It was his second league goal of the season and another reminder of why Chelsea rate him so highly.

The 18-year-old almost doubled his tally before the break, again bursting past Mitchell, but this time his effort flashed narrowly wide of the far post. Still, Chelsea went into half-time with clear momentum and a deserved lead.

Chelsea take control after the break

Any hopes Palace had of mounting a comeback were dealt a blow just four minutes into the second half. Trevoh Chalobah won the ball brilliantly in midfield and played forward to Joao Pedro, who combined neatly with Estevao before cutting inside Adam Wharton.

Instead of looking for a pass, Joao Pedro backed himself and struck a powerful left-footed shot that slipped under Henderson and into the roof of the net. It was a confident finish and a goal that effectively put Chelsea in command at 2-0.

From there, Chelsea dominated possession and territory. Estevao continued to cause problems, forcing Henderson into a smart one-handed save from a curling effort, while Marc Cucurella could not generate enough power on the rebound.

Fernandez seals it from the spot

The third goal arrived in the 64th minute and came from the penalty spot. A teasing cross from Reece James was spilled by Henderson, and Joao Pedro’s follow-up effort struck Canvot on the hand at close range. After a VAR review, referee Darren England awarded a penalty, deeming the handball accidental but still punishable.

Fernandez stepped up and showed calm leadership, rolling the ball confidently into the bottom-right corner to make it 3-0. It was his fourth league goal of the campaign and capped another strong all-round display.

Matters worsened for Palace soon after when Wharton was shown a second yellow card for another late challenge on Caicedo, leaving the hosts with ten men for the final stages.

Late consolation but job done

Chelsea made several changes to manage the game, with Rosenior introducing Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana and Jamie Gittens. Palace, to their credit, continued to push and were rewarded late on when Chris Richards headed in after Sanchez had made an excellent save from Jefferson Lerma.

The goal denied Chelsea a clean sheet but did little to change the outcome. The Blues saw out the closing minutes comfortably to secure a deserved win.

What it means

The victory extends Chelsea’s unbeaten league run against Crystal Palace to 17 matches and makes it back-to-back Premier League wins under Rosenior. Crucially, it moves Chelsea up to fourth place, putting pressure on rivals below them and strengthening their push for Champions League qualification.

With confidence growing and young talents like Estevao and Joao Pedro shining, Chelsea look increasingly settled and dangerous.

Attention now turns to Europe, with Chelsea travelling to Naples on Wednesday night to face Napoli in the Champions League. A positive result there could further boost belief that this squad is beginning to find its rhythm at a crucial stage of the season.
