Chelsea’s 3 Centre-Back Shortlist Revealed — One Name Stands Above the Rest

Chelsea’s defensive rebuild under Liam Rosenior is already beginning to take shape, and all signs suggest his first move as Blues boss will be at the heart of the back line.

With Levi Colwill sidelined as he recovers from a serious ACL injury, Chelsea are short on reliable options at centre-back. What once looked like a problem the club would push into the summer has now become an urgent priority, with plans brought forward and a clear shortlist emerging.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are currently weighing up three centre-backs: Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, Como’s Jacobo Ramon, and Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi. All three are being seriously considered, but when the profiles are placed side by side, there is a growing feeling that only one truly fits Chelsea’s immediate needs.

At the top of the shortlist appears to be Jacquet. The French defender has impressed in Ligue 1 and is attracting attention across Europe. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Chelsea have already held direct talks with Rennes, a clear sign of intent. At 21, Jacquet fits the age profile Chelsea have favoured in recent windows: young, athletic and seen as a long-term project.

Jacobo Ramon falls into a similar category. The Como defender is highly rated and has shown promise in Italy, but like Jacquet, he would be stepping into English football without any Premier League experience. For a Chelsea side already packed with young talent, that presents a risk.

Rosenior has inherited a squad full of potential but light on battle-hardened experience. That is especially dangerous in defence, where mistakes are punished ruthlessly in the Premier League. While Jacquet and Ramon may offer upside, neither can guarantee immediate stability.

That is where Marcos Senesi enters the conversation.

On paper, Senesi does not fit Chelsea’s usual recruitment model. At 28, he is older than the typical Blues target and closer to his peak years than his development phase. But dismissing him for that reason alone would be short-sighted. In fact, his age may be his biggest strength.

Chelsea’s defence has often looked naïve under pressure, particularly against physical or well-organised sides. Senesi brings exactly what has been missing: composure, experience and a deep understanding of Premier League football. With close to 100 league appearances to his name, the Argentine defender knows what it takes to survive in England’s top flight week after week.

More importantly, Senesi’s numbers back up his reputation. According to FBref, his defensive output over the past year places him among the elite in his position. He averages 1.62 interceptions, 2.08 blocks and an outstanding 8.00 clearances per 90 minutes. Those figures rank him in the 92nd, 99th and 97th percentiles respectively when compared to other centre-backs.

These are not flashy statistics, but they are the foundations of a reliable defence. Senesi reads danger early, puts his body on the line and clears his lines without fuss. In a Chelsea side that has often struggled to manage games, those qualities carry huge value.

There is also the question of adaptation. Jacquet and Ramon would need time to adjust to the pace, intensity and physical demands of the Premier League. That learning curve can be unforgiving, especially at a club where scrutiny is relentless. Senesi, by contrast, would arrive ready-made.

Pairing Senesi with Colwill once the England international returns could offer the perfect balance. Colwill’s calm distribution and ability to step into midfield would be complemented by Senesi’s defensive instincts and aerial strength. It would allow Rosenior to build from a position of security rather than constant experimentation.

Financially, Senesi also represents a sensible option. Bournemouth are unlikely to demand the kind of inflated fee often associated with younger, high-potential players. Chelsea would be paying for certainty, not promise.

Rosenior’s early weeks in charge have already shown his focus on structure and discipline. To implement those ideas, he needs players who can execute them immediately. While Jacquet and Ramon may yet become top defenders, Chelsea cannot afford to wait.

The shortlist may include three names, but the decision feels increasingly clear. For a club seeking stability, leadership and proven quality at the back, Marcos Senesi stands out as the most complete solution.

Sometimes, the smartest signing is not the youngest or the most exciting. It is the one who gives a team exactly what it needs, exactly when it needs it.
