Steinmark had his left leg amputated after being diagnosed with bone cancer. Sadly, Steinmark would pass away in 1971, but his story and courage inspired congress to pass the National Cancer Act of 1971 and President Richard Nixon to sign it into law, beginning the “War on Cancer”
