Guardiola later admitted that Foden’s appearance was not part of the original plan.

“I didn’t want to play Phil that many minutes,” he said. “But the injury to Oscar happened. Everyone who came from the bench were really good, and we are in the semi-final again. Really pleased.”

Foden’s presence helped steady City after the disruption, with the England international linking play well and adding control in midfield. His involvement underlined City’s depth, even on a night when Guardiola was keen to protect key players.

Cherki lights up the Etihad

City’s attention now shifts back to the Premier League, where they face West Ham on Saturday. Guardiola’s side are currently two points behind leaders Arsenal and cannot afford any slip-ups in the title race.

The Carabao Cup, however, remains firmly on City’s agenda. They have been drawn against last season’s winners Newcastle United in a two-legged semi-final to be played in January, setting up a challenging tie.

For Guardiola, the balance between chasing trophies and managing player fitness will be crucial, especially with injuries beginning to appear. Bobb’s situation will be monitored closely over the coming days, but there is cautious optimism that the problem is minor.
