"He Has to..." – Enzo Maresca Opens up on not using Jadon Sancho and what he needs to do to secure a starting spot at Chelsea

Jadon Sancho’s time at Chelsea has been anything but smooth since his move from Manchester United. The winger, now on loan with an option for a permanent deal, has struggled to earn a starting spot in the squad. His last start came on October 20, leaving fans wondering about his future under manager Enzo Maresca.

Despite limited opportunities, Sancho reminded everyone of his quality by delivering a crucial assist during Chelsea’s recent 2-0 win over Heidenheim in the Europa Conference League. After the match, Maresca praised the winger’s abilities but made it clear that Sancho needs to prove he’s ready both mentally and physically.

“I’ve said from the start, Jadon is very important for us. But he has to be fit—mentally and physically. When he is, he can really help us,” Maresca explained. “Unfortunately, we haven’t used him much lately, but he showed tonight how valuable he can be. We need that kind of creativity in tight games.”

Securing a starting spot won’t be easy for Sancho. Chelsea’s squad is packed with talent, especially on the wings. Players like Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, making it difficult for Sancho to break through. So far, he’s made only seven appearances this season, far fewer than many of his teammates.

With Chelsea competing in multiple tournaments and facing a hectic December schedule, Maresca hinted that Sancho and other fringe players will have more chances to prove themselves. “We have nine or ten games in December,” Maresca said. “Players like Jadon, Axel [Disasi], Benoit [Badiashile], and Cesare [Casadei] need to be ready. They will get their chances.”

Chelsea’s busy fixture list includes a crucial match against Aston Villa, followed by games against Southampton and Tottenham. The team will also continue their European campaign, meaning rotation will be key.

As the festive period approaches, Maresca’s focus on squad depth could work in Sancho’s favor. However, it’s clear that the winger needs to step up and prove he can consistently contribute if he hopes to become a regular starter.
