Manchester United has officially appointed Rúben Amorim as their new head coach following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal last month. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, previously at Sporting CP, faced delays in taking charge due to complications with his release clause. However, with those issues now resolved, Amorim is set to lead his first training session this week.
During Amorim’s absence, Ruud van Nistelrooy served as interim manager, securing three wins and one draw. Despite these results, United remains in disappointing positions, 13th in the Premier League and 15th in the Europa League.
While Amorim plans to give all players a fresh opportunity to prove themselves, Christian Eriksen’s future seems decided. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Danish midfielder will leave Manchester United when his contract expires in June 2025.
Unlike many other United players, Eriksen’s deal does not include an option for an additional year, and no extension talks are currently underway. Romano suggests that Amorim’s assessment of Eriksen might not influence this decision.
Speaking to the media ahead of Denmark’s Nations League match against Spain, Eriksen expressed a lack of focus on his contract situation.
“I haven’t focused on it yet, and I haven’t heard anything from the club,” he said. “As a footballer, you just turn up, train, and let the coach decide. It’s about football right now, and we’ll see what happens in January or the summer.”
Despite the uncertainty, Eriksen emphasized his satisfaction with his role in the team. He has been a key player for United this season, contributing three goals and four assists — only Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho have been involved in more goals.
“It has been lovely,” Eriksen said. “You want to play as much as possible and make an impact. It feels great to be part of something decisive.”
As Amorim begins his tenure, he faces the monumental task of restoring United’s form. Balancing the squad and managing transitions like Eriksen’s departure will be critical to building a competitive team for the future.
