LSU Roars to No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports College Baseball Rankings.

Louisiana State University (LSU) has ascended to the pinnacle of college baseball, securing the No. 1 spot in the USA TODAY Sports College Baseball Rankings. This achievement underscores LSU’s dominance and sustained excellence in collegiate baseball.

LSU’s baseball program boasts a rich history, with multiple national championships and a consistent presence in the College World Series. Under the guidance of Head Coach Jay Johnson, the Tigers have solidified their reputation as a powerhouse in college baseball.

In the 2023 season, LSU clinched its seventh national title, defeating Florida in the College World Series. The team’s performance was highlighted by standout players such as Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, who were both selected in the first two rounds of the 2023 MLB Draft. Skenes’ selection as the No. 1 overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Crews’ No. 2 overall pick by the Washington Nationals marked a historic moment for the program. Additionally, an SEC-record 13 LSU players were drafted in 2023, showcasing the program’s ability to develop top-tier talent.

LSU’s ascent to the top of the rankings is a testament to its sustained success in recent seasons. In 2024, the Tigers finished with a 43–23 record, securing a spot in the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Despite a challenging Southeastern Conference (SEC) schedule, LSU’s resilience and depth were evident throughout the season.

The team’s performance metrics further highlight its dominance. In 2023, LSU led the nation in runs scored (634) and shutouts (12), while finishing second in home runs (144) and walks received (413). The pitching staff also set a school record with 798 strikeouts. In 2024, LSU continued its strong performance, leading the nation in strikeouts pitched (733) and finishing second in shutouts (7). These statistics underscore the program’s balanced approach to both offense and defense.

LSU’s commitment to player development is evident in its consistent production of MLB talent. In the 2025 MLB Draft, nine LSU players were ranked among the Top 150 college prospects by D1Baseball, the most of any program in the nation. Notable prospects include right-handed pitcher Chase Shores (No. 24), left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson (No. 27), and first baseman Jared Jones (No. 39). These rankings reflect the program’s ability to attract and nurture elite talent.

LSU’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the field to its state-of-the-art facilities. Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, serves as the home for LSU baseball and is renowned for its fan-friendly atmosphere and advanced amenities. The stadium’s design and features enhance the game-day experience for players and fans alike, contributing to the program’s success.

As LSU continues to build on its legacy, the future appears bright for the Tigers. With a strong recruiting class, a history of player development, and a commitment to excellence, LSU is poised to maintain its position at the forefront of college baseball. The program’s sustained success serves as a model for other institutions aiming to achieve similar heights.
