McLean, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, joined the Kentucky coaching staff in June 2024 under head coach Mark Pope. Prior to his tenure at Kentucky, McLean served as an assistant coach at Lamar University, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s offensive strategies and player development. His efforts contributed to Lamar’s record-breaking 19-14 season in 2023-24, marking the program’s most wins since moving to NCAA Division I.
Before his time at Lamar, McLean spent six seasons at the University of Houston, where he was instrumental in the Cougars’ success, including back-to-back American Athletic Conference titles and a Final Four appearance in 2021. His responsibilities encompassed opponent scouting and player development, working closely with future NBA talents such as Marcus Sasser, Quentin Grimes, and Damyean Dotson.
Role at Kentucky
At Kentucky, McLean has been focusing on developing the team’s frontcourt players, including Amari Williams, Andrew Carr, and Brandon Garrison. His expertise in skill development and his experience in high-pressure environments have been invaluable assets to the Wildcats.
International Coaching Involvement
In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, McLean serves as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Bahamian National Team. Under his guidance, the team achieved historic victories, including defeating Argentina twice in the Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament, securing a spot in the final qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympics.
