Father Ryan High School in Nashville, Tennessee, has announced the appointment of former NFL quarterback Zach Mettenberger as the new head coach of its football program. Mettenberger, who previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator, steps into the role with a wealth of experience from both his playing career and coaching background.
Mettenberger’s Background
Born in Athens, Georgia, Mettenberger’s football journey began at Oconee County High School, where he showcased his talents as a quarterback. He continued his collegiate career at Louisiana State University (LSU), leading the Tigers to significant victories and earning recognition for his performance on the field. Mettenberger was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft and later played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His professional career also included stints in various alternative football leagues, including the AAF, The Spring League, USFL, and XFL.
Coaching Career
Transitioning from player to coach, Mettenberger began his coaching career in 2020 as the offensive coordinator at Hillsboro High School in Tennessee. He then joined Father Ryan High School in 2021 as an assistant coach, further honing his coaching skills. In 2022 and 2023, Mettenberger expanded his coaching experience at the collegiate level, serving as an offensive analyst for the University of Alabama under head coach Nick Saban. He returned to Father Ryan in 2024 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, before being named head coach in February 2025.
