1. Creating More Negative Plays
Wommack identified the need for Alabama’s defense to generate more negative plays, such as tackles for loss and sacks. He acknowledged that while the defense had shown efficiency in the previous season, it fell short in disrupting the offense behind the line of scrimmage. He noted that achieving this goal requires a combination of fundamental skills, strategic scheming, and a proactive mindset from players.
2. Improving Anticipation in Coverage
Another area of focus for Wommack was enhancing the defense’s ability to anticipate plays, particularly in the secondary. He emphasized the importance of players reacting to the quarterback’s drop and eye progression, rather than merely responding to the ball’s release. Wommack believes that playing with anticipation, especially in vision-based coverage schemes, will lead to more takeaways and better overall defensive performance.
