With spring practice heating up and expectations rising in Athens, one voice in the Georgia locker room is starting to rise above the rest. All-American safety Malaki Starks, a cornerstone of the Bulldogs’ defense, isn’t just leading with his elite play—he’s leading with his words. And last week, Starks delivered a powerful message to his teammates that reverberated throughout the Georgia football facility.
“We’re not entitled to anything,” Starks said during a closed-door team meeting that was later relayed to media by head coach Kirby Smart. “This G on our chest doesn’t guarantee a win. We’ve got to earn it every day.”
Those words carry serious weight from a player like Starks, who enters the 2025 season as one of the nation’s premier defensive backs. A finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award in 2024, Starks has been a vocal leader since arriving in Athens, but now as a veteran and projected first-round NFL Draft pick, his voice rings louder than ever.
A Leader Emerges
Starks’ message didn’t come out of nowhere. Georgia is entering the 2025 season with sky-high expectations after narrowly missing the College Football Playoff last season. The Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to Alabama in the SEC Championship, ending a two-year CFP streak. With a chip on their shoulder and a loaded roster, Georgia is looking to reclaim its place at the top of college football.
According to Smart, Starks pulled the defensive unit together during a film session and challenged them not to rest on their laurels.
“He basically said, ‘If you’re here to ride someone else’s coattails, you’re in the wrong room,’” Smart said. “That’s what we need from our veterans. He’s setting the tone for everything we want this program to be.”
Starks, known for his instincts, range, and physicality, has also shown growth in his football IQ, spending extra time in the film room and mentoring younger defensive backs. Freshman early enrollee Caleb Downs, a five-star transfer from Alabama, said Starks has been instrumental in helping him adjust to Georgia’s system.
“He doesn’t have to help me,” Downs said. “But he does because he wants all of us to be great. He leads by example every day.”
The Standard in Athens
Georgia’s defense, coordinated by Glenn Schumann, is once again projected to be among the best in the country. With returners like Starks, linebacker Smael Mondon, and defensive end Mykel Williams, the Bulldogs have veteran talent at every level. But as Schumann has repeatedly stressed this spring, talent alone doesn’t win championships.
“Malaki’s message was perfect,” Schumann said. “We tell them all the time—potential is nothing without execution. He brought that message into the locker room and made it personal.”
That level of accountability has become a trademark of Georgia under Kirby Smart. The “standard” isn’t just about beating opponents—it’s about beating complacency. After winning national titles in 2021 and 2022, and staying competitive ever since, the program has built a culture around constant improvement.
Starks echoed that sentiment in a media availability after practice last week.
“Every team is new,” Starks said. “What we did in the past is history. This group has to decide what kind of legacy we want to leave.”
Eyes on the Title
With a veteran quarterback in Carson Beck returning and weapons on both sides of the ball, Georgia is once again in the national title conversation. But inside the locker room, the Bulldogs are less focused on predictions and more concerned with preparation.
“People are already putting us in the Playoff,” Starks said. “That’s cool, but it doesn’t mean anything right now. Our mindset is simple—work like we’re chasing something, because we are.”
The Bulldogs’ 2025 schedule includes early tests against Clemson and South Carolina, with road trips to Ole Miss and Texas later in the year. It’s a gauntlet that will test their mettle and depth. But with leaders like Starks setting the tone, Georgia appears poised for another deep run.
Former Bulldog great and current SEC Network analyst David Pollack praised Starks’ growth on and off the field.
“He reminds me of guys like Roquan Smith and Lewis Cine—those alphas who bring energy and focus every day,” Pollack said. “Georgia doesn’t just produce great players. They produce leaders. Malaki is next in that line.”

For Starks, this season isn’t just about chasing another All-American honor or padding his NFL résumé. It’s about finishing what he started—and helping others elevate in the process.
“I came here to be part of something bigger than myself,” Starks said. “If I can leave this program better than I found it, then I’ve done my job.”
