Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel has been urged to make a pivotal decision regarding sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s role in the 2025 season

Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel is facing significant decisions regarding sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s role for the 2025 season. Iamaleava’s 2024 performance included 19 touchdowns and five interceptions, contributing to a 10-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.

However, recent developments have raised questions about his commitment and future with the team. On April 10, 2025, Iamaleava missed practice amid reports of ongoing NIL contract negotiations, with his father reportedly seeking a deal exceeding his current $3.1 million valuation. The following day, his absence continued, suggesting active negotiations.

Coach Heupel has previously emphasized areas for Iamaleava’s improvement, including leadership, decision-making, and consistency. He noted the importance of Iamaleava setting the offensive tone and refining his decision-making skills.

These off-field issues, combined with the need fo on-field development, place Heupel in a challenging position to determine Iamaleava’s role in the upcoming season.
