Shesterkin makes 29 saves as Rangers beat Golden Knights.

Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves as the New York Rangers defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday.

“‘Shesty’ made big saves when he had to,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said.

Vincent Trocheck and Adam Edstrom scored for New York (20-20-2), which has won two straight games and four of its last six.

“It’s exactly how we want to play: the way we did tonight,” Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren explained. “We were quite defensive. We definitely wanted to improve our defensive play as a unit. We appear to have improved in that area in recent games. So that’s the key to winning games, and it worked out well for us tonight.”

Mark Stone scored, and Ilya Samsonov made 24 saves for Vegas (28-11-3), which has lost consecutive games.

“Offensively, we do have some guys that aren’t executing at the level they’re used to, right?” Bruce Cassidy, the Golden Knights coach, said. “There were a lot of low-to-high plays today that appeared to have a positive outcome against man-to-man. They hop over a stick, and we’re now in the neutral zone, so they’re off the hook. So there is a little of that going on. Sometimes it’s the time of year. You have lulls where things click for you. This was our October at home. Right now, we have to work extremely hard to score.”

Stone gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead

“We weren’t extremely crisp in the first two. We gave them some chances in the third. It was an excellent goaltender. “If he sees the puck, he’ll make the most saves,” Stone stated. “We performed an excellent job generating traffic. Honestly, we just didn’t capitalize on our opportunities. We got some solid shots that bounced off the sticks, but we couldn’t find one near the conclusion of the power play.

Trocheck tied the game 1-1 at 9:54 on the power play. Mika Zibanejad’s slap shot from the point struck Trocheck in the chest in front of the net, and Trocheck backhanded the loose puck into an empty net.

“The power play responded after their power-play goal,” Laviolette remarked. “the was a key point in the game. With a 1-0 lead and our first power play, we must take advantage. So it was a valid point.

Edstrom tipped in a Jonny Brodzinski shot at 5:57 of the third period, giving the Rangers a 2-1 victory.

We had spoken about crashing the net, so I was simply trying to get in there,” Edstrom explained. “I got a tip on the puck, and it went in. You basically practice tips from everywhere. That is one of the things I will devote some time and work to, just as the side shots. It was nice to get one.”
