This decision follows a disappointing 4-13 season, marking the team’s 10th losing record in the past 13 years. Despite high expectations set by owner Shad Khan, who had previously described the roster as the “best team assembled by the Jacksonville Jaguars ever,” the team’s performance fell significantly short.
Pederson’s tenure with the Jaguars began in February 2022, bringing with him a reputation as an accomplished football coach, notably leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory in 2018. In his inaugural season with Jacksonville, he guided the team to a 9-8 record, clinching the AFC South title and achieving a remarkable comeback victory against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round.
However, the subsequent seasons did not mirror this initial success. The 2023 season saw the Jaguars start strong with an 8-3 record, only to experience a late-season collapse, finishing 9-8 and missing the playoffs. The 2024 season further exacerbated the team’s struggles, beginning with four consecutive losses and culminating in a franchise-worst 52-6 defeat to the Detroit Lions. These challenges were compounded by injuries to key players, including quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and a defense that ranked among the league’s worst.
Owner Shad Khan, in announcing Pederson’s dismissal, emphasized the need for new leadership to meet the expectations of the team’s loyal fan base. Despite Pederson’s departure, General Manager Trent Baalke has been retained, a decision that has sparked debate among analysts and fans. Baalke’s tenure has been marked by both notable successes and questionable decisions, including the selection of defensive end Travon Walker over Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 1 pick in 2022.
The search for a new head coach is now underway, with potential candidates including former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who previously served as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator and has experience with the Jaguars as a linebackers coach. Other candidates reportedly under consideration are Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
Pederson’s departure adds to the growing list of NFL head coaching vacancies, joining teams such as the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, and New England Patriots, all of whom are seeking new leadership following disappointing seasons.
