Cole Palmer’s goal in the fourth minute was declared offside by VAR, ending Chelsea’s amazing start to their match against Newcastle United. Referee Simon Hooper first allowed the goal, but the video assistant referee (VAR) reviewed it and reversed it. The Premier League then clarified that the goal was disallowed because Palmer was just ahead of Bruno Guimaraes, the final Newcastle defender.

Palmer scored a goal past Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, after a pass from Nicolas Jackson, giving Chelsea a good start. Palmer had excellent control and fast movements. The happiness, however, was short-lived as the goal was disallowed after VAR official Jarred Gillett reviewed the play and saw Palmer’s offside position just before he received the pass.
“After reviewing the footage, it was confirmed that Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was offside when the pass was made,” the Premier League said in a statement explaining why the goal was disallowed. The standard VAR procedure, which attempts to ensure that all calls are accurate, was followed in this judgment.
Chelsea recovered in spite of the initial setback. Nicolas Jackson gave Chelsea the lead just eighteen minutes later by putting in Pedro Neto’s clever cross. This time, Palmer was key because he made the pass that allowed Neto to assist Jackson with his goal.
