"He is a great player, but he will cost Liverpool.."—Carragher fears This Liverpool star will cost them the league Title
Carragher believes Dominik Szoboszlai must deliver more goals and assists to match the creativity of Liverpool's Premier League rivals.
Liverpool has won 11 of 12 games in all competitions under their new manager Arne Slot, giving them a great start to their title hopes journey. Although they have been playing well, Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, has questioned one player in particular and says he could prevent Liverpool from winning the league this season. In his opinion, Liverpool is lacking a key player in the Midfield. Dominik Szoboszlai in particular needs to improve his attacking skill and creativity.
Using the advantage of Manchester City’s and Arsenal’s early-season mistakes, Liverpool is currently leading the table. In his column for The Telegraph, Carragher expressed worries that, even with Liverpool’s impressive play, they might not win if they don’t have a better playmaker like those in Arsenal and City’s teams. He believes Szoboszlai, although hard-working, doesn’t quite match the level of rivals like City’s Kevin De Bruyne or Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard in terms of creativity and attacking impact.
Carragher commented, “Liverpool is missing that X-factor player in midfield who can elevate the team to the next level. Szoboszlai brings energy and works hard, but his results needs improvement. When we look at players like Odegaard, Foden, or De Bruyne, their influence in attacking positions is clear – they can change the game with a pass, an assist, or a goal.”
“Szoboszlai’s attacking and defensive play have been excellent, but he hasn’t contributed enough goals,” according to Carragher. Although the Hungarian international has been a consistent starter, Carragher believes his offensive performance has not yet lived up to the £60 million he paid to join Liverpool.
“Szoboszlai does a lot of ‘dirty work,’ which is valuable,” Carragher said. “But he’s too often in good positions without delivering the final pass or shot we need. His energy and effort are great, but we need him to become more productive in terms of assists and goals.”
According to Carragher, a team competing for the title really needs a playmaker who can act as a game-changer in critical moments. He pointed out that both Arsenal and City have star players in the No. 10 position who can make a difference when their teams need it most. Carragher believes Liverpool, on the other hand, is lacking a player who brings that creative spark to the team.
He explained, “The No. 10 role is reserved for a player who can provide that magic – the one who can find a teammate with a perfect pass or score when it matters most. Szoboszlai has done a lot of good work off the ball, but he needs to step up his play when Liverpool has possession.”
Interestingly, Carragher’s does not share these thoughts alone. The need for Szoboszlai to get better in front of the goal has also been brought up by Liverpool manager Arne Slot. This season, Szoboszlai has only scored once and contributed three assists. Slot expressed similar concerns as Carragher after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over AC Milan in September, saying, “For an attacking midfielder, his numbers need to go up.” Szoboszlai does really well at pressing, but he should contribute more to goal scoring and chances creation.
Slot and Carragher seems to agree that although Szoboszlai contributes a valuable work rate and on the defensive side, he hasn’t yet shown that he can be that creative spark Liverpool needs to stay in the race for the title.
