Florida High School: 2024 MaxPreps Player of the Year Malachi Toney, a Miami Hurricanes commit, excels
The focus is currently solely on college football. The 2024 season will soon come to an end. And with that, transfer news comes with the holidays. Let’s not overlook the intriguing news about how high school football is changing in the interim. We are discussing Malachi Toney, a wide receiver from American Heritage High School, who is gleaming with his most recent accolades.
The renowned MaxPreps Award added even more prestige to his already impressive resume.Toney, the wide receiver for the Miami Hurricanes, has won significant honors before, though.
With the Miami Hurricanes, Toney officially committed during the first week of December. He is currently a member of the outstanding wide receiver room of Mario Cristobal. It’s also clear that the young man has developed a persona that has enabled him to evade Miami’s attention. The 247Sports rating places Toney as the No. 44 overall prospect in the state and the No. 52 player at his position in the country.
The young man’s exceptional hands, which allow him to grab almost every ball thrown at him, speak for themselves. He even guided No. 23 American Heritage to victory over Jones in the 4A state football title, winning 40–31. He had some intriguing statistics: he had two total touchdowns and completed 15 of 18 passes for 188 yards. MaxPreps had the idea to recognize Toney at that point.
They are a one-stop shop for everything high school athletics. They now publish a ranking of the best players from each of the 50 states every year as part of their ritual. This time, Toney, a wide receiver for American Heritage High School, took home the Florida High School Football Player of the Year award. The wide receiver amassed 58 receptions, 12 touchdowns, 28 career touchdowns, and 1,008 yards while leading the American Heritage Patriots to a 12-2 record. He had won another honor a few days ago.
Toney is preparing for the January 11, 2025, East vs. West game at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Prior to that, 100 Navy All-Americans were honored as part of the countrywide Road to the Dome tour. It was clear that Toney would consider himself fortunate to receive the honor. He was chosen by the All-American Bowl Selection Committee. He received recognition at the virtual jersey presentation on December 4.
That’s how Cristobal and company ended up getting lucky. The relationship with Toney has been sporadic. This is due to Toney’s October 3 decommitment from Miami. Once more, however, he had second thoughts and considered landing with the Hurricanes. Consequently, he recommitted on October 28. Running back Byron Louis and safety Xavier Thomas, two of Toney’s teammates, signed with the Florida Gators at the start of December.
