Interviewer: Shemar, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. First off, how does it feel to be here at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, and what has the experience been like for you so far?
Shemar Stewart: It’s honestly an honor to be here. It’s a great opportunity to showcase what I’ve been working on, not just for the past year, but for my entire football career. The Senior Bowl has been incredible—getting to compete against some of the best talent in the country has been a great experience. I’ve learned a lot from the coaches, and it’s been amazing to see how the game is played at the next level. Being able to represent Texas A&M and show the world what I can do has been something I’ve looked forward to for a long time.
Interviewer: That’s great to hear! Now, let’s take it back a bit. You’ve had an impressive career at Texas A&M, and you’ve been a key contributor to their defense. What was it about Texas A&M that made you choose them as your school, and how did your time there shape you as a player?
Shemar Stewart: When I was making my decision, I was looking for a program that had a great football tradition, a winning culture, and coaches who would challenge me to be the best I could be. Texas A&M checked all of those boxes. From day one, I felt like I could grow as both a player and a person there. Coach Jimbo Fisher, the defensive coaching staff, and my teammates pushed me to develop my skills on and off the field.
What really stood out to me was the team culture. It’s a family environment. We hold each other accountable, and that helps you grow, not just as a football player but as an individual. The resources, the coaching, and the level of competition in the SEC all played a big part in my development. I’m grateful for my time at A&M, and I definitely feel ready for the next level because of what I learned there.
Interviewer: You mentioned the SEC, which is known for its competitive nature. What has it been like playing in one of the toughest conferences in college football, and how do you think it prepared you for the NFL?
Shemar Stewart: Playing in the SEC has been an incredible experience. Week in and week out, you’re going up against top-tier talent—whether it’s the offensive lines or the quarterbacks, the competition is always elite. That’s something I’ve always embraced because it’s made me better. Every game was an opportunity to learn and grow. Facing that kind of competition has prepared me for the NFL in a big way. It’s a grind, no question, but I’ve had the chance to go against some of the best players in college football, and I think that’s helped me refine my skills and sharpen my mindset.
In terms of preparation for the NFL, the level of competition in the SEC forces you to be on your toes at all times. It’s not just about your physical ability—it’s also about mental toughness. The NFL is going to be even more intense, but having that experience in the SEC, where every game matters and every snap counts, is something I’ll lean on when I make that transition.
Interviewer: As a defensive end, you’re known for your pass rush ability, but you also excel at stopping the run. What’s your approach to the game, and what are some of the key elements that make you successful in both aspects?
Shemar Stewart: For me, it all starts with preparation. Whether I’m rushing the passer or defending the run, it’s about being disciplined and understanding the game plan. I like to study film and break down what the offense is trying to do, whether it’s blocking schemes or tendencies of the quarterback. That knowledge allows me to be more instinctive and reactive on the field.
When it comes to rushing the passer, it’s all about speed, power, and hand technique. You have to be able to engage with the offensive lineman and then get off the block quickly, using your strength to overpower them or your agility to slip by. But it’s not just about the physical aspect—it’s about timing. Understanding when to use your moves and how to exploit the weaknesses in the offensive line is key.
For stopping the run, it’s about being able to shed blockers and maintain your gap discipline. You can’t get caught out of position, or the offense will find a way to exploit it. I pride myself on being able to play both the run and the pass effectively. You can’t afford to be a one-dimensional player, and that’s something I’ve focused on throughout my career.
Interviewer: You’ve been able to showcase a lot of talent at the Senior Bowl already. What are some of the things you’re hoping to prove while you’re here, both to the coaches and to NFL scouts?
Shemar Stewart: Coming into the Senior Bowl, I wanted to prove that I can play at a high level, no matter the competition. I think I’ve been able to show that I can handle one-on-one situations with offensive linemen who are going to be in the NFL. I want to show that I can dominate in both the pass rush and against the run. I also want to prove that I have the ability to play multiple positions along the defensive line if needed. I know that versatility is key in the NFL, and being able to contribute in different roles will only increase my value.
I’m also focusing on proving that I’m a high football IQ guy. I’ve been working a lot on my mental game—reading offenses, anticipating plays, and making sure I’m always in the right position to make a play. I want scouts to know that I’m not just a physical specimen, but I’m also a student of the game.
Interviewer: That sounds like a well-rounded approach. Off the field, what kind of person is Shemar Stewart, and what do you want fans and scouts to know about you as an individual?
Shemar Stewart: Off the field, I’d describe myself as someone who’s driven, humble, and a hard worker. Football is something I’m passionate about, but I also believe in being a positive influence in my community and setting an example for others. I’ve had the privilege of giving back to my hometown and helping out with local youth football camps. It’s something I really enjoy, and it keeps me grounded.
As far as my personality, I’m someone who always looks to get better. I’m constantly pushing myself to be better than I was yesterday. I know that there are a lot of great players out there, and I’m just trying to carve my own path, do the best I can, and stay true to who I am.
Interviewer: Looking ahead to the NFL, what’s your ultimate goal? What kind of impact do you want to have in the league?
Shemar Stewart: My ultimate goal is to be the best defensive player I can be, and to have a long and successful career in the NFL. I want to make a real impact on every team I’m on, and I want to be known as a player who is relentless, hardworking, and someone who elevates the guys around him. The NFL is full of great talent, but my goal is to be a player who stands out because of his effort, his technique, and his passion for the game.
Beyond that, I want to win championships. I believe that with the right mindset and work ethic, I can help contribute to a team’s success in a big way. That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day—making plays that help your team win, and leaving a legacy as a player who helped his team achieve greatness.
