This past weekend, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated Indiana in the first round of the college football playoffs. This means that the Sugar Bowl will be between Georgia and Notre Dame. Since they played a home-and-home series in 2017 and 2019, this will be the third time these two programs have faced off against one another under Kirby Smart. However, Georgia has a significant edge over Notre Dame this time.

The Bulldogs have a few advantages going into this game, but Georgia’s edge is the additional time off to recover. Actually, it’s all related to a position group that isn’t healthy and probably won’t be at the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs’ greatest asset is that Gunner Stockton is the starting quarterback.

That’s not in reference to Stockton being better than Beck or anything like that. But it has everything to do with the reality that Stockton and Beck are two different types of quarterbacks and the Bulldogs will have to modify their offense.

Another reason for that is that Georgia has never demonstrated what an offense headed by Stockton looks like. Since he first arrived on college, Stockton has always been a part of an offense that is based on Beck’s style. However, the Dawgs will have had three weeks to develop an offensive strategy that plays to Stockton’s advantages in the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame will have to attempt to forecast what that game plan would look like because the Bulldogs have never captured that on camera.

Even if the Fighting Irish have a strong defense, it’s not fun to have to forecast the outcome of a college football playoff game.
