Ruben Amorim Reveals the advice he gave Amad Diallo on What he MUST Improve in No.10 Role After Man United’s 2-1 Victory Over Viktoria Plzen
Amorim highlights key areas for improvement as Amad Diallo looks to establish himself in Manchester United's attacking midfield role.
Manchester United secured an important Europa League victory against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday, but it wasn’t without its challenges. The Reds delivered a lackluster first-half performance, marked by numerous errors, leaving the scoreline 0-0 at the break.
The second half saw Viktoria Plzen capitalize on a costly mistake by United goalkeeper André Onana to take an unexpected lead. However, this setback seemed to ignite Manchester United into action, especially after manager Ruben Amorim introduced five impactful substitutes.
One of those substitutes, Rasmus Højlund, emerged as the hero, scoring two decisive goals to seal a much-needed win for the Reds.
Amad Diallo, who has impressed in recent weeks as a right wingback, was given a new challenge in this match, starting as one of the two No.10s in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation. It was his first time in the role under the new coach, and the Ivorian struggled initially, much like his teammates.
In the first half, Amad frequently dropped too deep to collect the ball, which disrupted United’s attacking flow. However, his performance improved significantly in the second half. He played a key role in creating United’s opening goal and became a constant threat in the latter stages of the match.
After the game, Ruben Amorim shared his thoughts on Amad’s performance and what he needs to work on to excel as a No.10.
“He can be a good player in that position,” Amorim said. “We need left-footed players in this team to play that role.
“In the first half, he was coming for the ball too much. He needs to play nearer the opposition defence. That’s where he can make the most impact.
“He will improve in the future for sure.”
Amorim acknowledged that Amad’s tendency to drop deep likely comes from his experience playing in a deeper position as a wingback. However, to truly succeed in the No.10 role, the 21-year-old must learn to operate in more advanced, dangerous areas where he can create and score goals.
As the season progresses, it will be fascinating to see how Ruben Amorim balances Amad’s minutes between wingback and No.10. While he has shown potential in both positions, his long-term future at Manchester United seems to lie in a more attacking role.
With continued guidance from Amorim and more opportunities in the No.10 position, Amad Diallo has the potential to become a key player in United’s frontline. For now, though, the focus will be on helping him adapt to this new role and unlocking his full potential.
