Mohamed Salah has surprised many by naming Darwin Nunez as his favorite teammate to play with at Liverpool, despite the Uruguayan being a controversial figure among fans. Nunez, who holds the title of Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever, has often been the subject of mixed opinions due to his inconsistency in front of goal. However, Salah’s admiration for the striker is clear.

During a live Q&A on Zoom, Salah was asked to name his favorite teammate from the current Liverpool squad. He replied, “It was Firmino, now I feel I generally like playing with Nunez. A lot of people don’t like him but I like playing with him. I see [the Q&A host] keeps shaking his head not liking [my answer].”

Salah went on to praise Nunez’s unique skills, adding, “I like playing with him in general. A player with different skills. Not a lot of people understand his game.” Despite Nunez’s varying performances, Salah sees something in his game that others may overlook.

Their partnership on the pitch is evident. Salah and Nunez have combined for 16 goals in 96 appearances, with Nunez assisting Salah 11 times and Salah returning the favour five times. Salah has been involved in more goals with only three other players: Roberto Firmino (36), Sadio Mane (32), and Trent Alexander-Arnold (18).

Interestingly, Salah isn’t the only high-profile figure to praise Nunez. Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who also plays alongside Nunez in the Uruguay national team, has spoken highly of him. Suarez praised Nunez’s humility and work ethic, describing him as a player who is destined for greatness.

Although fans may be frustrated with Nunez’s inconsistency, Salah’s comments show that the striker has qualities that are highly valued by his teammates. Nunez may still have room to improve, but his contributions and character seem to be gaining respect behind the scenes at Liverpool.
