“If I’m Arteta, I’d Be Worried” —Paul Merson Warns Mikel Arteta Over Ethan Nwaneri Comparisons to Foden and Sancho

Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Mikel Arteta should be cautious about recent comments comparing young talent Ethan Nwaneri to top players like Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho. Merson’s concern comes from the pressure such comparisons can place on a rising star like Nwaneri, who is only 17.

Nwaneri has already made waves at Arsenal, appearing in 11 matches across all competitions this season and scoring four goals. Despite his promising displays, Arteta has been careful not to rush him into the starting lineup, especially in the Premier League.

The youngster’s rise began when he made history as the youngest player to feature in a Premier League match, debuting against Brentford in September 2022 at just 15 years old.

Dan Micciche, Nwaneri’s former academy coach, recently praised the teenager’s talent, placing him in the same “level” as Foden, Palmer, and Sancho. Micciche said:

“I worked with Foden, Sancho, and Palmer. Ethan is in that tier.”

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus also sees similarities, commenting:

While acknowledging Nwaneri’s talent, Merson expressed concern that these comparisons could create unrealistic expectations. He emphasized the importance of having the right people around Nwaneri to keep him grounded.

Merson explained:

“His ability to get on the ball, make runs, beat players, and see passes is impressive. But if I’m Arteta, I’d be worried about those comparisons. Not because of Ethan himself, but because of the pressure from people around him.”

Arteta has been clear about his trust in Nwaneri’s potential but also stressed the need for careful management. He spoke about balancing support and challenge to help the youngster grow:

“When he made his debut, it wasn’t a gift. It was part of a plan. We trust him and want him to know that. But we also need to protect him as he develops.”

Arteta added:

“We push him to fly but make sure he stays stable. His future depends on how much he wants it, and right now, he wants it a lot.”
