Tyson AKA the Pizza Man just received an offer from the Texas Longhorns
Jaylon Tyson, a 6’7″ guard/forward from Plano, Texas, has recently committed to the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team. This move marks a significant development in his basketball journey, following his time at Texas Tech and a brief period at Texas.
Tyson began his high school career at Plano East before transferring to John Paul II High School, where he led the team to its first-ever TAPPS Class 6A state championship. During his junior season, he averaged 23.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, earning first-team TAPPS all-state and district MVP honors. As a senior, he averaged 22.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.1 steals per game, further solidifying his reputation as a top prospect.
Ranked as a consensus four-star recruit, Tyson was the No. 36 player nationally and the No. 9 small forward according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He initially committed to Texas Tech, where he was recruited by then-head coach Chris Beard. However, following Beard’s move to Texas, Tyson requested and was granted a release from his National Letter of Intent with Texas Tech, leading to his commitment to the Longhorns in April 2021 .
Tyson’s tenure at Texas was brief. He appeared in eight games during the 2021–22 season, averaging 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. His most notable performance came in the season opener against Houston Baptist, where he scored 11 points in 14 minutes . Despite this promising start, his playing time diminished, leading to his decision to enter the transfer portal in December 2021 .
After entering the transfer portal, Tyson joined Texas Tech in December 2021. During the 2022–23 season, he played in 31 games, starting 18. He averaged 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 assists per game. Notably, he scored a career-high 27 points against West Virginia and recorded three double-doubles during the season .
