Sydney Romero Appointed Associate Head Coach at Oklahoma Softball in Emotional Homecoming.

In a poignant and full-circle moment for the University of Oklahoma softball program, Sydney Romero has been appointed as the associate head coach, returning to her alma mater in a role that reflects both her deep connection to the team and her evolution as a leader in the sport.

Romero’s journey with the Sooners began as a standout player from 2016 to 2019. During her collegiate career, she amassed impressive statistics, including becoming the program’s all-time leader in at-bats and doubles. Her performance on the field earned her two first-team All-America selections and two national championships in 2016 and 2017. In 2019, she was named the Big 12 Player of the Year and was a top-three finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.

After completing her playing career, Romero transitioned into coaching, serving as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma. During this time, she contributed to the team’s success, including back-to-back national titles in 2021 and 2022. Her coaching prowess was recognized when the Sooners’ staff was named the 2022 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year.

Romero’s coaching journey continued as she took on assistant coaching roles at Duke University and the University of Oregon. At Duke, she served as the hitting and infield coach, helping the Blue Devils achieve a 48–12 record and host an NCAA Super Regional for the first time in program history. At Oregon, she reunited with former Oklahoma assistant coach Melyssa Lombardi, contributing to the team’s success.

Now, as the associate head coach at Oklahoma, Romero brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the program’s culture. Her appointment is a testament to her growth as a coach and her enduring commitment to the Sooners. In her new role, she is poised to inspire the next generation of players, drawing on her rich history with the team and her passion for the game.

Romero’s return to Oklahoma is not just a professional milestone but also a personal homecoming. Her journey from a player to a coach reflects the cyclical nature of mentorship and legacy within collegiate athletics. As she steps into this new chapter, Sydney Romero exemplifies the values of dedication, leadership, and community that are at the heart of the Oklahoma softball program.
