Tyler Buchner is a unique figure in college athletics, having transitioned from a starting quarterback at Notre Dame to a national champion lacrosse player, and now returning to the Fighting Irish football team as a walk-on wide receiver. Born in La Jolla, California, Buchner attended Helix High School, where he was a standout in both football and lacrosse. As a quarterback, he was a four-star recruit and the No. 93 overall player in the 2021 class, according to On3 Industry Rankings. In lacrosse, he was ranked among the nation’s top prep players and had previously committed to play at Michigan before his football recruitment took off.
Buchner committed to Notre Dame as a quarterback and made an immediate impact. As a freshman, he threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 336 yards and three scores. In 2022, he started the season as the Fighting Irish’s starting quarterback but missed most of the season due to injury.
