Tyler Buchner is a unique figure in college athletics, having transitioned from a starting quarterback at Notre Dame to a national champion lacrosse player, and now returning to the Fighting Irish football team as a walk-on wide receiver. Born in La Jolla, California, Buchner attended Helix High School, where he was a standout in both football and lacrosse. As a quarterback, he was a four-star recruit and the No. 93 overall player in the 2021 class, according to On3 Industry Rankings. In lacrosse, he was ranked among the nation’s top prep players and had previously committed to play at Michigan before his football recruitment took off.
Buchner committed to Notre Dame as a quarterback and made an immediate impact. As a freshman, he threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 336 yards and three scores. In 2022, he started the season as the Fighting Irish’s starting quarterback but missed most of the season due to injury. He returned to lead the team to a Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina, scoring five touchdowns.
In 2023, Buchner transferred to Alabama to play under offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. He started the third game of the season against South Florida, completing 5 of 14 passes for 34 yards. However, he ended the season behind starter Jalen Milroe and backup Ty Simpson.
After his time at Alabama, Buchner returned to Notre Dame in December 2023 to finish his degree and pursue lacrosse. He joined the Fighting Irish lacrosse team and played in 11 games during the 2024 season. The team went on to defeat Maryland 15-5 in the NCAA Division I lacrosse national championship.
In May 2024, Buchner announced he was rejoining the Notre Dame football team as a walk-on wide receiver. He had previously played quarterback for the Fighting Irish but transitioned to lacrosse during his return to campus.
