OU Softball Pitcher Audrey Lowry ‘Playing Free’ as She Gears Up for NCAA Regional Play.

 

As the Oklahoma Sooners softball team prepares for the NCAA Regional play, freshman pitcher Audrey Lowry is embracing a mindset that has propelled her onto the national stage. Known for her calm demeanor and strategic pitching, Lowry has become an integral part of the Sooners’ pitching staff. Her approach to the game—focused on playing freely and trusting her training—has allowed her to excel in high-pressure situations.

Hailing from Pittsboro, Indiana, Lowry attended Tri-West High School in Lizton, where she made a significant impact on the softball field. Over her high school career, she amassed impressive statistics, including a 0.69 ERA and 1,084 strikeouts. Her dominance in the circle earned her the title of Miss Indiana Softball and the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year in 2024. Additionally, she was a two-time NFCA All-American and a three-time MaxPreps High School All-American.

Lowry’s success extended beyond high school as she played for the Tennessee Mojo in the summer, leading her club to four top-three finishes at the PGF National Championships, including a runner-up placement in 2022.

Joining the University of Oklahoma as part of the 2025 freshman class, Lowry quickly adapted to the collegiate level. Head coach Patty Gasso recognized her potential early on, noting her “quiet” and “crafty” pitching style, drawing comparisons to former standout Kelly Maxwell. Lowry’s ability to mix pitches and maintain composure under pressure has been a valuable asset to the Sooners’ pitching rotation.

Lowry’s freshman season has been marked by several standout performances. In her collegiate debut against San Diego State, she earned a win, showcasing her readiness for the challenges of Division I softball. Later in the season, she pitched a complete game shutout against Kansas, allowing no runs and striking out multiple batters.

One of her most notable outings came during a series against South Carolina, where she pitched a complete game in a 2-1 victory. Despite a late-game error that put a runner on base, Lowry maintained her composure, inducing a double play and securing the win for the Sooners.

Central to Lowry’s success is her mental approach to the game. She emphasizes the importance of playing freely, focusing on the process rather than the outcome. This mindset has been cultivated through her experiences in practice and competition, where she has learned to trust her abilities and remain composed in high-pressure situations.

Working with pitching coach Jennifer Rocha has been instrumental in Lowry’s development. Rocha’s guidance has helped Lowry refine her mechanics and pitch selection, allowing her to become a more effective and versatile pitcher. Lowry appreciates the challenges presented in practice, such as focusing on specific pitches like the dropball and changeup, which have enhanced her pitching repertoire.

As the Sooners enter NCAA Regional play, Lowry’s contributions will be crucial to the team’s success. Her ability to perform under pressure and her commitment to continuous improvement make her a valuable asset in the postseason.
