Auburn’s softball season comes to an end with a loss to Florida State in the Tallahassee Regional Final.
Auburn University’s softball team concluded their 2024 season with a 10-4 loss to No. 12 Florida State in the Tallahassee Regional final on May 19, 2024. Despite a valiant effort, the Tigers were unable to overcome a decisive seven-run sixth inning by the Seminoles, ending their postseason run and marking the end of Head Coach Mickey Dean’s tenure.
The game began with Auburn taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to a two-out single by Nelia Peralta that drove in the first runs. However, Florida State quickly responded in the third inning with a three-run home run by Michaela Edenfield, giving the Seminoles a 3-2 advantage. Auburn managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning, but the Seminoles’ explosive sixth inning proved to be the turning point.
In the top of the sixth, Florida State capitalized on a bases-loaded situation with no outs. Kaley Mudge drew a five-pitch walk to bring in the go-ahead run. Jaysoni Beachum followed with a single to shortstop, adding another run, and Kalei Harding’s two-run single extended the lead. The inning culminated with Isa Torres hitting a three-run homer, giving the Seminoles a commanding 10-3 lead. Auburn’s KK McCrary hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.
The game also marked the final appearances for Auburn seniors Maddie Penta, Shelby Lowe, and Makayla Packer. Penta, a three-time All-American and the 2023 SEC Pitcher of the Year, leaves a significant legacy with a 76-36 record and 941 strikeouts over her career. Lowe and Packer also contributed to the team’s success, leading Auburn to four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances.
Under Coach Dean’s leadership, Auburn achieved a 235-130 record with six NCAA Tournament appearances in seven seasons. The Tigers’ 2024 season ended with a 29-21-1 overall record and a 9-15 mark in SEC play.
With the conclusion of the season, Auburn will begin the search for a new head coach to lead the program forward. The team will also look to build upon the foundation set by the senior class and continue to compete at a high level in the SEC and nationally.
