LAKERS NEWS: When Can The Lakers Offer Extensions To Luka Doncic And Austin Reaves?.

As the Los Angeles Lakers prepare for the 2025 NBA offseason, securing contract extensions for Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves stands as a top priority. Both players have been pivotal to the team’s success, and locking them in for the long term is crucial for the franchise’s future.

Luka Dončić, acquired by the Lakers in a high-profile trade with the Dallas Mavericks on February 2, 2025, is currently under a five-year, $215 million contract. However, this deal does not include a supermax extension, which he would have been eligible for had he remained with Dallas. The Mavericks reportedly did not consider offering him the supermax due to concerns about his physical longevity.

Now with the Lakers, Dončić is eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension starting in the 2025 offseason. This extension would keep him with the team through the 2029-30 season. The Lakers have until August 2, 2025, to finalize this deal. Failing to do so could lead Dončić to enter free agency after the 2025-26 season, making it more challenging for the Lakers to retain him.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Dončić has expressed a strong commitment to the Lakers. Reports indicate that he is “fully committed” to the team and eager to contribute to its success.

Austin Reaves, who has been a breakout star for the Lakers, is currently under a four-year, $54 million contract extension that began in the 2023-24 season. This deal ensures his presence with the team through the 2026-27 season.

Given his significant contributions, including multiple 40+ point games and a pivotal role in the Lakers’ playoff run, there is speculation about the possibility of a renegotiation or an additional extension. However, as of now, there are no official reports indicating that the Lakers are actively pursuing another extension for Reaves.

Securing extensions for both Dončić and Reaves is vital for the Lakers’ long-term strategy. Dončić’s potential supermax extension would solidify him as the cornerstone of the franchise, while Reaves’ continued development and contributions make him an invaluable asset. The Lakers’ front office, led by GM Rob Pelinka, is expected to prioritize these negotiations in the coming months.

The deadline for Dončić’s extension is August 2, 2025. The Lakers’ ability to finalize this deal will significantly impact their roster planning and cap flexibility moving forward.
