Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School’s four-star cornerback, Chaston Smith, has officially committed to Notre Dame. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 170 pounds, Smith is ranked as the No. 247 overall player, No. 17 cornerback nationally, and No. 7 prospect in Tennessee for the 2026 recruiting class. He chose the Fighting Irish over 25 other scholarship offers from Power Five programs, including finalists Clemson, Indiana, South Carolina, and Texas A&M. Smith’s commitment adds to a growing list of elite defensive recruits joining Notre Dame.
Smith’s journey to Notre Dame began with an unofficial visit to South Bend during the Florida State game on November 9, 2024. Following this visit, he set a commitment date for December 1, 2024. Despite a subsequent visit to Nebraska, the Irish impressed him enough to announce his commitment on December 1, 2024. His recruitment was led by head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive backs coach Mike Mickens, both of whom played pivotal roles in securing his commitment.
Smith’s commitment bolsters Notre Dame’s secondary, aligning with the program’s emphasis on developing elite defensive backs. Under the guidance of Coach Mickens, Notre Dame has produced standout cornerbacks, including Leonard Moore, who was named Freshman All-American in 2024, and Benjamin Morrison, who earned All-American honors in 2023.
