Oklahoma’s Patty Gasso chosen to coach USA Softball program through 2028 Olympics
In a significant development for both collegiate and international softball, Patty Gasso, the esteemed head coach of the University of Oklahoma (OU) softball team, has been appointed as the head coach of the USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT) through the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This announcement, made on February 3, 2025, by USA Softball, marks a historic moment in the sport’s history.
Patty Gasso enters her 31st season as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, where she has established a dynasty in collegiate softball. Under her leadership, the Sooners have secured eight NCAA Division I National Championships, including an unprecedented four consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024. Her tenure has been marked by consistent excellence, with her teams making 17 appearances in the Women’s College World Series (WCWS). Gasso’s career record at OU stands at 1,515 wins, 352 losses, and 2 ties, making her the Big 12 Conference’s all-time winningest coach in any sport.
Beyond her on-field success, Gasso has been instrumental in developing elite talent, coaching 84 All-Americans and 201 all-conference selections. Her commitment to excellence extends to the classroom, with 180 academic all-conference and 23 Academic All-America selections under her guidance.
Gasso’s appointment as head coach of the USA Softball WNT is a testament to her profound impact on the sport. She becomes the seventh female head coach in the program’s history, following in the footsteps of notable predecessors such as Rosalie Sorenson, Marge Ricker, Carol Spanks, Shirley Topley, Margie Wright, and Heather Tarr.
