Men’s Basketball: Ohio State lands a seven-footer Christoph Tilly from the Transfer Portal

In a significant move to bolster their frontcourt, Ohio State University’s men’s basketball team has secured a commitment from 7-foot center Christoph Tilly, formerly of Santa Clara University. Tilly, a German native, brings a blend of size, skill, and experience that the Buckeyes hope will address their recent struggles in the paint.

Christoph Tilly, standing at 7 feet tall and weighing 240 pounds, has been a consistent presence in Santa Clara’s lineup. During the 2024–25 season, he started all 31 games, averaging 12.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. He shot 55.4% from the field and 31.5% from three-point range, earning second-team All-West Coast Conference honors. Tilly’s ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and his proficiency in the post make him a versatile addition to Ohio State’s roster.

Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler expressed enthusiasm about Tilly’s potential impact on the team. “We needed to add size, which we did with Christoph Tilly, who’s a really skilled and versatile seven-footer,” Diebler remarked. He highlighted Tilly’s ability to contribute both offensively and defensively, noting his scoring efficiency and shot-blocking capabilities. Diebler emphasized that Tilly’s experience in a high-major conference will help him transition smoothly into the Big Ten’s competitive environment.

Tilly’s addition addresses a critical need for Ohio State: a reliable center who can contribute immediately. With the departure of Aaron Bradshaw, the Buckeyes were left with a gap in the center position. Tilly is expected to step into a starting role, providing a strong presence in the paint and complementing the team’s perimeter players. His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting will also open up driving lanes for guards like Bruce Thornton and Devin Royal.

With Tilly’s commitment, Ohio State aims to improve upon its performance in the upcoming season. The coaching staff is focused on developing team chemistry and integrating new players into the system. Tilly’s experience and skill set are expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s success. As the season progresses, the Buckeyes will look to build upon their strengths and address areas for improvement.

Christoph Tilly’s transfer to Ohio State represents a strategic move to enhance the team’s frontcourt depth and versatility. With his size, skill, and experience, Tilly is poised to make a significant impact in the 2025–26 season, helping the Buckeyes compete at a high level in the Big Ten and beyond.
